About Edward Chaloner
Chaplain to Kings James I and Charles I.
The most striking monument in St Nicholas Church is that to Sir Thomas Chaloner (1561-1615). Made of alabaster it shows the figures of Sir Thomas and his second wife kneeling over a prayer stool, under a canopy which is supported by two soldiers. It was erected by Sir Thomas's third son Edward and was originally in the chancel where Sir Thomas and his wife are buried. When the church was rebuilt it was transferred to the Lady Chapel. It has been restored several times, most recently in 2001.
