About Elizabeth Gregory

Evidence needed to support Elizabeth Gregory as daughter of Robert Bishop & Martha Bishop

Biography

Capt John Gregory born: 1623 in Stockwith, England died: 1676 Rappahannock County, Virginia Officer in the Colonial Militia. Emigrated to Virginia prior to 1656; settled on the north side of the James River in Charles County. 20 February 1663 had a grant of 600 acres in Rappahannock County. Vestryman in 1665.

Marriage & Children

John Gregory married Elizabeth Unknown [surname of Bishop not proven] about 1653 in Lancaster County, Virginia. Known children include:

  1. Anne Gregory, married Thomas Edmondson
  2. Richard Gregory, eldest son, married Catherine Chowning
  3. John Gregory, dsp
  4. Elizabeth Gregory, married Thomas Wheeler
  5. Mary Gregory, married James Taylor

Three children, Richard, Elizabeth and Mary Grigory, are named in the will of son John Grigory dated 18 December 1677 and proved 4 September 1678 in Rappahannock County Court.

We know that John Gregory Sr was married to his wife, Elizabeth, by 1674 from an (Old) Rappahannock Co VA deed dated 1674 that mentions Elizabeth to be the co-grantor of land. It is highly unlikely that John Gregory Sr married this hypothetical Elizabeth Bishop, a girl probably under 10 years of age by 1674. In any case, it is biologically impossible for this hypothetical Elizabeth Bishop to have mothered John Gregory Jr who received 480 acres in 1677 by the Will of Robert Bishop that he devised to his sister, Mary Gregory, by Will dated 1678, or of Mary Gregory, who was old enough to marry James Taylor in 1682. Both John Gregory Jr and Mary Gregory were clearly adults by 1678, meaning that they were born before this hypothetical Elizabeth Gregory could have married John Gregory Sr.
