Jean Durand, the immigrant, was a man of great force and character. He was much older than his wife, whom he married about 1685, at Stratford, and came to Derby, taking up his residence near Edward Wooster, in Derby village, where he was made a freeman. .... Whether in France or England he studied or practiced medicine is not known, but it is safe to say that he was versed in the science, for he soon became noted in the Connecticut colony for his medical knowledge. He was known as the "Little French Doctor," and it is said that when not engaged in this vocation he did fine mechanical repairing of watches and jewels, and it is recorded his son Samuel was taught the art. His sons, John and Noah, however, became noted doctors in the colony.

His wife was Elizabeth Bryan, born 1680 and baptized in 1685, daughter of Richard Bryan and granddaughter of Alexander Bryan. She inherited quite an estate from her father and grandfather.

In 1718 his estate was £55. In the records he was recorded as a chirurgeon or surgeon.

Notes

S.R. Durand:

"Dr. John Durand's wife, Elizabeth Bryan, was a daughter of Richard Bryan, and a granddaughter of Alexander Bryan...[Her mother] Mary (Wilmot) Bryan was sometimes called Mercy...Elizabeth Bryan was born April 19, 1680 [in] Milford, Connecticut [Milford Vital Records, vol 1., pg. 36], and baptized April 25, 1680. Her marriage to Dr. John Durand was recorded in the old books of record in the Surrogate's Office in New York City, under Marriage Licenses, volume 303: "1698 - Durend, Dr. John - Eliza Bryan 10 Sept."

"She outlived her husband, Dr. John Durand by about 30 years. It is recorded that she deeded lands to her son, Ebenezer, in 1756; in a land conveyance made by her children June 20, 1757 (Derby, Connecticut Deeds, 7:295). In an old memorandum book dated 1763, there is a reference made of her living, at which time she would have been 83 years old. In the last years of her life, she made her home with her daughter. The Johnson families lived in the northern part of Derby (now called Seymour), and she was probably buried in this part of the town."
