The granddaughter of George Dent, First Lieutenant of the Third Battalion, Maryland Flying Camp during the Revolutionary War. Nellie was raised at New Haven, her father's estate outside of Saint Louis, Missouri; a product of the southern culture adopted by her parents. She married physician Alexander Sharp on February 7, 1854.

Their children: Navy Captain Alexander Sharp; Army Captain Frederick Dent Sharp; Emma Dent Sharp (1859-1860); Elizabeth Bryson Petitt; Ulysses S. Grant Sharp (1863-1949); Louis Dent Sharp (1865-1946); Nelly Dent Bennet; Jesse Grant Sharp (1869-1870); Julian Donaldson Sharp (1871-1881); and Julia Grant Nolan.
