Elliott "Mac" MacFarlan Moore

Elliott "Mac" MacFarlan Moore of Stamford died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at Stamford Hospital. He was 70.

He died of cancer, according to his family.

Born Dec. 8, 1930, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Elliott MacFarlan and Janet Whitton Moffett Moore.

Mr. Moore was advertising director of Golf Digest from 1974 to 1976, and vice president and publisher of Golf Magazine from 1981 to 1986. He served for eight years as a member of the USGA on the group's Public Relations Advisory Committee. He was a member of the board of directors of the National Golf Foundation, served on its executive committee, and headed its Advertising Committee.

As publisher of Golf Magazine, Mr. Moore negotiated with the LPGA to launch Fairway Magazine and negotiated with the PGA Tour to launch Tour Magazine. He also launched The Country Club magazine and served from 1986 to 1996 as president, publisher and editor. Most recently, he was sales director and director of Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent.

He had been a member of the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., since 1976. He also was a member of the Country Club of New Canaan and an honorary member of the Atlanta National Golf Club in Alpharetta, Ga., the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Turnberry Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.

He is survived by his wife, Marta Moore of Stamford; two daughters, Mairly Scanlon of New Zealand, and Dr. Sarah Moore of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Janet Moore Burrows of Wilmette, Ill.; two brothers, Peter Mark of Houston, and Griffith Mark of Lakeville; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, the Rev. Gary Wilburn will officiate.
