About Emmanuel Ford Faulkner, Sr

Emmanuel in Warren county, NC 1774. Moved to Iredell, NC 1798. Left will naming sons Moses, Aaron, John, Ford, Hardy and Francis.

Emmanuel "Emanuel" Ford Forkner (aka Faulkner, Falkner, Fortner) was born in 1718 on his parents' plantation farm in Queen Anne's County, in the English Province (colony) of Maryland, just a few miles from where his grandfather, Francis Faulkner had landed when immigrating from England in 1665.

Emmanuel was a simple colonial farmer, known to be illiterate. His family name had been spelled "Faulkner" in England, coming from "Falconer," indicating someone who hunted with falcons, but on America's frontier where spoken, not written, English prevailed, it was translated into "Falkner" and then "Forkner" and "Fortner," depending on the branch of the family. Emmanuel was mainly known as a "Forkner," as on the 1790 US Census record. His parents were:[1]

Father: John Pleasant Faulkner, b: 1678 in Hog-Pen Neck, Kent County, English Colony of Maryland
Mother: Sarah Elizabeth Ford, b: 4 APR 1688 in Anne Arundel County, Colony of Maryland
In about 1750, in Granville County, North Carolina, Emmanuel Ford Forkner married Elizabeth Violet Dickerson, b: about 1733 in Hanover County, English Colony of Virginia. The couple set up a plantation or farm in Granville County NC and had the following 10 children: [2]

Ann Forkner - Faulkner - Falkner b: 1752 in Granville, NC
Moses Forkner b: 1754 in Granville County, North Carolina
Aaron Forkner - Fortner, b: 1756 in Granville , North Carolina
John Forkner b: 1758 in North Carolina
Emmanuel Ford Fauconnier - Pfoertner - Fautiner - Fortner, b: 1760 in Granville, North Carolina
Hardy Forkner b: 1762 in Granville County, North Carolina
Temperence Falkner b: 1764 in North Carolina
Shugar Falkner b: 1766 in Granville County, North Carolina
Francis Forkner b: 1768 in North Carolina
Elizabeth Forkner b: 1770 in North Carolina
The family's plantation was called "Sandy Creek," Granville County, North Carolina. After the American Revolution, Emmanuel and his wife and their 2 youngest daughters moved to Warren County, North Carolina, USA, where they were recorded living in 1790.

According to the 1790 Census, Emanul Forkner lived in Warren County, North Carolina, when the Census was taken.

Apparently between 1790 and his death, eight years later, Emmanuel Forkner moved from Warren County to Iredell County (unless it was the county boundary that changed), North Carolina. He names those of his children that were still living in his Will, where he effectively disinherited all but 2 of his 10 children, leaving most of his estate to his wife, who survived his passing but died later in the same year (1798).
