  • 3. Thomas Tuttle, b. Eng. 1634; m. May 21, 1661, Hannah, dau. of Thomas Powell, * b. 1641; d. Oct. 10, 1710. He was a cooper; chosen Packer March, 1672, and 1674; Gauger and Packer 1704; Juryman 1682; constable 1683, excused from training on account of gout 1689; about 1690 conv. to s. Caleb the lot that was bro. David's in Yorkshire Quarter. In 1701 conv. to s. John "right in the Wigglesworth lot (north side of chapel between High and York sts.) for which I paid (english pound)15 to my son-in-law Joshua Hotchkess." Jan. 7, 1700, conv. to s. John Tuttle "my right in the home lot." Joshua Hotchkiss, John Ball and Eliphalet Ball wits. In 1695 conv. and to John Blakeslee. In 1707 admr. of Mr. Wm. Tuttle's remainder granted to his s. Thomas, and inv. of lands exhibited. In June 1689, with Capt. Moses Mansfield, took inv. and appraisal of est of James Davids (Col. John Dixwell). (english pound)276, 12s. 6d. Prest. Stiles says; "Thomas Tuttle, I have been told, assisted in laying out Mr. Dixwell, and there is some reason to believe he was the very person that privately dug Whalley's grave and assisted at his interment here."--History of the Judges; see app. He lived and d. on what is now a part of the College Square. The lot was assigned to Mrs. Constable in 1639. It fronted on Market Place (upper Green) about 170 feet, and extended back about half the square, between College and York, or nearly to High st. It contained about 15-S acres. In 1652 Mrs. Constable sold the lot to Thomas Wheeler who sold it in 1657 to Thomas Tuttle, the lot adjoined that of his father on the south. The two lots occupied half the front ib /cikkege st,m between Chapel and Elm, and comprised the larger proportion of the south half of the parallelogram, now called "College Square." On these Tuttle homesteads the most ancient of the college buildings were afterwards erected. The old boundary line produced across the upper Green, passes through the middle of the "Old State House," the Dixwell monument and the Center church. It is in fact coincident with the meridian line of the original nine squares of the town plot, and its intersection with a line parallel to and a little west of Temple st. is the exact central point of John Brockett's lay out. That point is in the porch or the vestibule of the Center chh. Thomas Tuttle by deed dated May 13, 1710--about 5 mos. before his dec.--conv. the homestead to youngest s. Joshua, who 40 yrs after, 1750, conv. to the College a narrow strip on the south side, 20 feet wide by 250 feet deep (to make room for the south middle college) excepting a strip on foot wide on which a part of the house stood. This determines the location of the dwelling very closely. Excepting this strip, the property was held by Thomas and desc. 123 yrs. ; previously held by Mrs. Constable 13 yrs. (1639-1652), Thomas Wheeler 5 yrs. (1652-1657), Thomas Tuttle and desc. 123 yrs. (1657-1780), John Scott 16 yrs. (1780-1796), whose executors sold it to the Colleg; whose period of possession, 86 yrs., (1796-1882), falls short more than on-third century of that of the Tuttle famly; but they will catch up in 1920, unless they sell out and remove to Hartford in the mean time. About 1756 in a conv. of right wid. of Joshua Tuttle the lot is described as bounded on the north in part by land of Benjamin Franlin Esq., of Philadelphia. Thos. Tuttle d. Oct 19, 1710; will dated May 6, 1701; proved 2d Tuesday of Nov., 1710; "son Joshua exr.; s. Caleb to have a set of coopering tools; gr. chil.
