Inscription SMITH FAMILY MONUMENT
Esther Webster, [d.] Mar. 9, 1793 æ. 85

Prior to the early 1800s gravestones stated a person's age at death using a variation of the Latin Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of one's Age), which is one year more than one's chronological age. At death Esther was Æ 86, but this family monument, obviously errected and inscribed well after the early 1800s, instead uses the symbol æ. to denote each person's chronological age at death.
