- François, duc de La Rochefoucauld, prince de Marcillac, was a noted French author of maxims and memoirs, as well as an example of the accomplished 17th-century nobleman. He was born in Paris in the Rue des Petits Champs, at a time when the royal court oscillated between aiding the nobility and threatening it. Until 1650, he bore the title of prince de Marcillac.
- François de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680), the greatest maxim writer of France, was born in Paris. His literary work consists of three parts: the letters, The Memoirs and The Maxims. The author re-edited The Maxims frequently during his lifetime. La Rochefoucauld joined the French army before he was sixteen and almost immediately began to take part in public life, in which he occupied a conspicuous role throughout his life, representing the type of the older nobility of the age of Louis XIV. His literary reputation commenced in 1665 with the anonymous publication of The Maxims, which at once established him among the leading men of letters of his time.
