About Francis Browning, of Culpeper County

From Art Browning:

Geni shows Francis Browning of Culpepper County, VA as being a son of Francis Browning I of MD, and Someone named Rachel Browning. This does not match my family records. I have copies of pages from a book "GENEALOGY of the BROWNINGS in AMERICA from 1621 to 1908" by Edward Franklin Browning, A.M. My family has passed along copies of our pages among us for years. It is said to be from the LIbrary of Congress, FWIW. It shows as Frances Browning of Culpepper County VA (1686-1775) as being married to Elizabeth Lloyd, not Rachel.(maiden name unkown in GENI?). Furthermore, his father was John Browning, Jr. of Jamestown; and grandfather, John, also of Jamestown. We have long believed that our lineage goes two more generation back through William Browning (born ~1615 in England), to Capt. John Browning, who came from England on the ship Abigail in 1622.

Francis Browning, Jr.

  • Born about 1686 St. Anne's Parish, King & Queen County / 1696 in Essex County, Virginia Colony
  • Died 21 Jan 1775 in St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia Colony
  • Son of Francis Browning Sr. and Rachel Merritt
  • Husband of Rachel - married before 1710
  • Husband of Elizabeth Lloyd — married about 1722 in Essex County, Virginia Colony

Birth Year Estimation

Based on his gifting land to son Francis in 1740, he was likely not born later than 1697. Various secondary sources estimate his birth slightly earlier than that.

Mike Marshall (Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia’s Northern Neck) reports that Francis Browning was born 1686 St. Anne's Parish, King & Queen County. Hurley shows Francis Browning, Jr. , born about 1696 as a son of Francis Browning (Browning-242), born 1672. [3]

In his widely quoted but erroneous work, Edward Franklin Browning shows Francis Browning, Sr, #1657, born about 1700 in Caroline County, Virginia, the son of John Browning Jr, born 1656. [4] See discussion under Research Notes. Agins has him born in St Anne's Parish, Caroline County, Virginia. [5]

Hi, America Frances Browning is my 2nd great grandmother. Please let me know anything on the Browning family line if you do not mind..I have some information on her. Her son Frank Albert King is my Great grandfather via my grandmother Ruth is his daughter..This Browning line information comes directly from America's close decendants e.g. son/grandson Her sister is Amanda Bramwell (Browning) Pretty Prairie, Kansas and her brothers are J.W. Browning Chase Kansas and W.E. Browning of New York.

If this helps Francis Browning shows to be my 7th great grandfather, as well my 2nd great grandmother America Frances Browning's father shows to be Caleb Browning Jr., whose father was named Caleb.. She has a 1/2 brother that shows to be named Caleb Browning III? I am researching these facts because in my family papers her son/grandson does not mention her parents, except for the Browning surname, so I have only the curators information on the Browning line except for family papers refer to America and her siblings, confirming the Browning surname in our family documents. My dna test with 23 and me shows me to have cousins with the last name Kelley, King, Moore, Dellenbach & .... My great great grandmother America Frances Browning's daughter-in-law Alice King was alive during my lifetime, however I was too young to think to ask her any questions. Alice Dellenbach married Frank Albert King the son of Charles William King from Ireland and America Frances King born (Browning)Thank you, Kind Regards, Deborah Abel.
