Distressing Suicide. — Last evening Monday, 31 October 1887, Mr. A. Braxton Hicks held an inquiry at Wimbledon as to the death of Mr. Frank Scott Haydon, aged 64 years, assistant keeper at the Public Record-office, Chancery Lane, who shot himself with a revolver at his residence, Southey Lodge, Kingston Road, Wimbledon, on Saturday, 29 October 1887. Mr. Haydon was a son of the late Mr. Benjamin Haydon, the celebrated painter, who committed suicide in 1846. —

Miss Ellen Haydon stated that her father had been engaged at the Record-office for upwards of 40 years. She first noticed a change in his health and manner in November of last year when he lost a brother. After that he became very emotional and violent in his temper. On Sunday, 7 August 1887 he had an attack of apoplexy, and since then he had laboured under the delusion that he was being followed about and that he was liable to be arrested. He had possessed a revolver for the past four years, and early on Saturday morning, 29 October 1887 she heard a report, and on proceeding to her father's room she found that he had shot himself. —

Mr Rodney, clerk at the Public Record-office, said he had known Mr. Haydon about eight years, and always thought him very strange mentally. About two years ago Mr. Haydon's brother was very violent, and was confined in Bethlehem Hospital, where he died. —

After medical evidence a verdict of temporary insanity was recorded.

Mr. A. Braxton Hicks, the Mid Surrey Coroner, held an inquiry at the Local Board Offices, Wimbledon, on Monday night, 31 October 1887, as to the death of Mr. Frank Scott Haydon, aged 64 years, assistant keeper at the Public Record Offices, Chancery lane, who shot himself with a revolver at his residence, Southey Lodge, Kingston road, Wimbledon, on Saturday last, 29 October 1887. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. Benjamin Haydon, the celebrated painter, who wrote his own biography and then committed suicide. —

Miss Ellen Mary Middleton Haydon, a daughter of the deceased, stated that her father had been engaged at the Record Offices for upwards of 40 years. She first noticed a change in his health and manner in November of last year, when he lost a brother. After that he became very emotional and violent in his temper.

On Sunday, 7 August 1887 he had an attack of apoplexy, and since then he had laboured under the delusion that he was being followed about, and that he was liable to be arrested for a criminal offence. He spoke of these matters in such circumstantial manner that witness at times thought there was some truth in what he said. On Friday, 28 October 1887 he went to the City to attend to his business, returning in the evening in his usual condition.

He had possessed a revolver for the past four years, and had remarked that "when they came for him they should not have him alive." Until Friday the revolver had been put away, but on that night he wanted to take it to bed with him. Witness persuaded him to place it on a chest of drawers. At a quarter past two on Saturday morning, 29 October 1887 she heard a loud report, and on proceeding to her father's room she found that he had shot himself. —

Dr. Frederick H. Blake, of Southey road, Wimbledon, described the position of the body after death, and stated that the deceased had undoubtedly pushed the muzzle of the revolver far into his mouth and fired it with both hands. The bullet had lodged in the brain. Witness knew him very well and saw him on Friday, when he seemed calmer than usual. —

A verdict of "Temporary insanity" was returned.
