About Gauthier I "Tyrel", seigneur de Poix

The family is originally from Triel, France. Gauthier aka Walter I Tyrel, 1st Lord of Pois, Castellan of Pontoise and Viscount of Amiens, a baron of France and England. Lord of Laingaham, Essex, Kingsworthy, and Avon in Hants. He accompanied William the Conqueror to the Conquest of England and participated in the Battle of Hastings, 1066. Walter and his men of Poix figured prominently in the Battle of Hastings, and are cited on the " Cartulaire de St. Martin de la Battaille" which was a list of prominent noblemen who participated in the battle. His name is also inscribed on the wall of the church at Dives, at the little port at Normandy, put there in 1861 by one of the antiquarian societies of France.

In 1046, with his wife Alix, he built the Chateau de Poix et de Moyencourt, and also the fortress of Famechon, and became one of the most powerful lords of the country and founder of one of the most illustrious lines in Picardy. He married twice, first a Saxon by the name of Olga; and second Alix, Dame de Fremontiers, the only daugher of Richard de Fremontiers. He had by his first marriage a son, Sir Walter Tyrel II. This son died before his father leaving Sir Walter III Tyrel. Walter III is of the family who in England, it is said, was with King William Rufus who died while hunting in the New Forest. Sir Walter died in 1068 or 1080, and was succeeded by his grandson Sir Walter III Tyrel.
