About Genevieve Gamache dit Lamarre

More Notes

Genevieve Gamache dite Lamarre, was born about 1637 in Saint-Illiers-la-Ville, Isle de France (province), the daughter of Nicolas Gamache dit Lamarre and Jacqueline Cadot. She is the sister of Nicolas Gamache, who married Elisabeth-Ursule Cloutier (1676) and is the half-sister of Jacques Gamache. Genevieve came to New France in 1652. On 11 November 1652, Genevieve married Julien Fortin dit Bellefontaine in the chapel of Saint-Joachim de Montmorency at Cap Tourmente, though the act is recorded in the Quebec City registers. Father Paul Ragueneau, superior of the Jesuits, performed the service. Two bans were published — on 28 October and 03 November — and the couple was given a dispensation for the third. Neither spouse could sign the marriage contract drawn up 23 October "in the home of Toussaint" at Cap Tourmente by notary Aubert. Genevieve's brother Nicolas was present at the contract signing. In the contract, he promised to give Genevieve clothes, furniture and linens in the amount of 200 livres and to feed the couple for two years. In return, they were both to serve him for this time, for which he would pay them 150 livres per year out of the inheritance of his and Genevieve's parents. A butcher, Julien was baptized 09 February 1621 in the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Vair (arrondissement of Mamers, diocese of Le Mans), Perche, the first of three children of butcher Julien Fortin and Marie Lavye, who were married 26 November 1619 at Notre-Dame-de-Vair. His godparents were Francois Loriot and Denise Fouet, "the widow Fortin." The elder Julien is the fourth of five children of Simon Fortin, who was buried 10 April 1617 in Notre-Dame-de-Vair. Marie Lavye is the daughter of Gervais Lavye, innkeeper of the Cheval Blanc."' Sadly, she was buried 24 November 1628 at Notre-Dame-de-Vair and Julien Fortin pere married Julienne Guillemin at Saint-Martin d'Ige on 07 January 1630. Julien fils worked as a butcher's boy for his father, and then came to Canada as early as 1650, when he received a land grant at Petit Cap (present-day Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. Genevieve and Julien had 12 children. Daughter Barbe was baptized 04 November 1654 at Quebec City, followed by Charles, who was born about 1656. On 23 August 1657, Julien Fortin bought one-eighth of the seigneurie of Beaupre and the Ile d'Orleans from Charles de Lauzon for 700 livres (contract by notary Rouer de Villeray). Son Eustache was born about 1658, followed by Jacques, who was baptized 15 January 1660 at Quebec City. On 11 February 1662, Julien sold his share of Beaupre and the lie d'Orleans to Francois de Laval, Bishop of Quebec, for 750 livres. Daughter Genevieve was baptized 09 April 1662 at Château-Richer, followed by Joseph (20 May 1664), Marie-Anne (01 March 1666) and Julien (22 April 1667). Pierre was born 21 May 1669 at Beaupre and baptized three days later at Château-Richer. Louis was baptized at Beaupre 19 March 1671, followed by Jean (born at Beaupre between 10 June and 25 July 1674) and Marguerite (born 25 May, Cap Tourmente, baptized 05 June 1677, Beaupre). Sadly, Jean died sometime after the 1681 census, which finds the family in the seigneurie of Beaupre, possibly already in the parish of Saint-Joachim. Their half-timbered house there, as described in the inventory of Julien's estate, measured 40 by 20 feet. Genevieve and Julien lost two children in 1687. Sons Julien (buried 22 November) and Louis (09 December) may have both been victims of the smallpox and measles epidemics that struck that year. Julien Fortin dit Bellefontaine died 10 August 1692 at the Hotel-Dieu de Quebec. Notary Etienne Jacob drew up an inventory of his estate on 09 and 11 July 1704. After a short illness, Genevieve Gamache dite Lamarre died 05 November 1709 in the home of her son Charles at L' Islet, where she was buried the next day.
