About George Allen, Clothworker of Queenhithe

Not the same as George Allen, of Sandwich who married Katherine Collins

George was a clothworker and apprenticed in 1613 under his brother in law Joseph Usher. He was admitted a freeman in 1620. He then became a master Clothworker. His son George apprenticed with him and became a freeman in 1655.

From The Records of London's Livery Companies Online are the following entries regarding George.

  • Georgius Allen - London - New apprentice, Son of Rici Allen Monnyer - Turrim London, London. Jozeph Ussher - Master Co Clothworker. Start Date: 30/09/1613 Apprentice Bond Length: 9 years.
  • Georg Allen - New freeman Co Clothworker, Jozeph Usher - Master Co Clothworker, 1620.
  • George Allen the Elder Sheeremaker - Queenehithe Master Co Clothworker, William Johnson - London - New apprentice - Start Date: 11/02/1658.

The age of apprenticeship was usually 14-21. So this would give George Allen, clothworker a birth date of about 1598, which would make him about 26 when he married Katherine Slarkes.

Note: This George Allen is continually being confused with the George Allen that immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony with the Rev Joseph Hull Company on 6 May 1635 from England. They are clearly two different people.

NOTE: Although one commonly sees postings and family write-ups that indicate that our George Allen is the George Allen who married as his second wife, Katherine Starkes, on 5 November 1624 in All Hallows Church, Honey Lane, London, I know of absolutely no documentation that would support that this is our George Allen. On the contrary, there is evidence that indicates that that George Allen was the son of Richard Allen of the Tower of London, and that he was still residing in London, England as late as 1640 when he was mentioned in the will of his brother, Henry Allen. That George Allen is also believed to be the same George Allen who died at St. Michael Queenhithe, London on 26 March 1664.) 04 Nov 1624 George Allen, of St Michael, Queenhithe, London, Clothworker, & Katherine Slarks, Spinster, dau. of [blank] Slarks, decd; at All Hallows, Honey Lane, London. Book Burials. Collection London: - Marriage Licences, 1611-1828
