About Grand Rabbi DovBer Friedman of Leovo
Was the most controversial member of the family, also described as a tragic figure. At first Admur of Husi (Rumania), Seuleni (Ukraine) and finally Leovo (Rumania). In 1869 he turned against Chassidism and published an attack against them which led to a conflict and battle of literature between the two great Chassidic families of Ruzhin and Sanz (Friedman and Halberstam respectively). He left home, and lived with one of the Maskilim in Chernovitz. The became known as the Sanz-Sadagora conflict, the Ruzhiners being accused of living in royal and pompous luxury, with excommunications and recriminations on both sides. Dov of Leovo later repented of his attack, but the conflict only ended with the death of R' Haim Halberstam of Sanz in 1876.
