About Gregorio H. del Pilar
Gregorio was one of the youngest generals during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War. He died defending retreating Philippine forces during the Battle of Tirad Pass.
It was in this generation that the 'Hilario' was dropped from the family surname. It was during his grandfather's generation that the 'del Pilar' was appended to the 'Hilario' surname for the family to comply with Governor General Narciso Clavería's 1849 edict covering surnames.
His love life was of interest to may historians. The following ladies have been connected to this boy General:
- Neneng Rodrigo, daughter of Bulacan’s first Filipino civil governor Segundo Rodrigo and also Goyong’s first love;
- Felicidad Aguinaldo, the younger sister of Gen. Aguinaldo who reportedly knelt, prayed, and wept at the exact spot where the young general died in Tirad Pass; and
- Dolores Nable Jose, a pretty heiress, whose name was embroidered in a handkerchief recovered by the Americans from Del Pilar’s lifeless body in Tirad Pass.
