a) GUILLAUME [III] Malet de Graville (-[Sep 1214/Oct 1215]). Henry II King of England confirmed the property of Valmont abbey, including the donation made by "Mathei de Gerarvilla et Willelmi filii sui", by charter dated to [1181/83][980]. "Will Malet" accounted for land at "Criketot" in the Pays de Caux in 1195[981]. "William Malet de Girardivilla" founded the church of Sainte-Honorine at Graville[982]. "…Willelmus Malet…" is listed among those who swore to uphold a treaty between John King of England and the count of Flanders dated 18 Aug 1199[983]. “…Willelmus Malet…" witnessed the treaty between John King of England and Philippe II King of France dated Sep 1214[984].

m (after [1198] ) as her second husband, PHILIPPA d'Alençon, widow of WILLIAM de Roumare Earl of Lincoln, daughter of JEAN [I] Comte d'Alençon & his wife Beatrix de Maine [Anjou] (-before [1220]). The primary source which confirms her parentage and three marriages has not yet been identified. Her second marriage is indicated by two charters. “Hemericus vicecomes Castri-Eraudi, Ala uxor quondam Roberti filii Ernesii, et Robertus Malet" relinquished "castrum de Esseio" in return for "terram et redditus apud Escocheium" by charter dated to [1220][985]. The family relationship between the three participants is explained in another charter dated to [1220] which records that “Hemerico vicecomiti Castri-Eraudi, Alæ uxori Roberti Ernesii et Roberto Malet, Roberti comitis Alenconii heredibus" assigned property for "castri de Esseio"[986]. She married thirdly (before Oct 1215) as his first wife, Guillaume de Préaux.

 Guillaume [III] & his wife had [two] children: 
  • i) ROBERT Malet de Graville (-after 1242). …. Wife unidentified see below.
  • ii) [ISABELLE Malet . La Roque records that Isabelle, daughter of “Robert [error for Guillaume?] Malet sire de Graville, qui vivoit l’an 1215 et de sa femme, “Dame de Sées, de Bernay le Bois et de Teuville...fille de Robert Comte d’Alençon”[994]. La Roque notes that he husband donated property to Bec for “son ame et de celle d’Isabelle sa femme” by charter dated 1228[995]. En 1219 après l’extinction des comtes d’Alençon, de la Maison de Montgomery, la Châtellenie de Séez, qui était de ce comté, fut du partage de Robert Malet, sire ou baron de Graville, fils de Philippa d’Alençon, sœur du dernier comte. Cette Châtellenie s’étendait sur dix-sept paroisses. La postérité du sire de Graville en fut privée par la confiscation des biens de Jean Malet, son arrière petit-fils, à qui le Roi Jean II «Le Bon» fit couper la tête en sa présence en 1356.


In 1219 after the extinction of the Counts of Alençon, of the House of Montgomery, the Châtellenie of Séez, which was in this county, was shared by Robert Malet, sire or baron of Graville, son of Philippa d'Alençon, sister of the last count. This Châtellenie extended over seventeen parishes. The posterity of the Lord of Graville was deprived of it by the confiscation of the property of Jean Malet, his great-grandson, whose head was cut off by King John II “The Good” in his presence in 1356.
