About Guy Westcott

Despite the historical genealogy below, it has not been proven that Stukely, William, and Richard Westcott who were in Salem, Massachusetts by 1636, were the sons of Guy Westcott and Mary Stukely.

It is however likely not a coincidence that the names Stukely and Damaris occur in Stukely Westcott's family.

  • 8. STUKELY8 WESTCOTT (GUY7, EDWARD6, STEPHEN5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, GUEDO2, THOMAS1) was born 1592 in Marwood Parish, Devenshire, England, and died January 12, 1676/77 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. He married JULIANA MARCHANTE October 05, 1619 in Bristol, England, daughter of JOHN MERCHANTE and JOANE COTTINGTON.
  • Notes for STUKELY WESTCOTT: Notes for Stukely Westcott: On August 8, 1638, nearly five months after Stukely Westcott had been ordered to leave Salem, Roger Williams "freely admitted twelve loving friends and neighbors" into equal ownership with himself of lands he had first purchased from the indians in 1636. On that list of stalwart men first appears the name of Stukely Westcott, and second, the name of William Arnold, both ancestors of the Westcotts of Cheshire and Milford, NY. The eighth name on the list is that of William Carpenter, who with Westcott and Arnold, made the crossing together from England. Others were John Greene, Thomas James, Robert Cole, William Harris, John Throckmorton, Thomas Olney, Francis Weston, Richard Waterman and Ezekiel Holliman--all thirteen men of names that have been perpetuated down through the years of nealy three centuries by deeds of public spiritedness. Roger Williams was an ancestor of the Westcott line, his progeny allied in nearly every generation. (Descendants of Stukely Westcott Vol. 1, Pg. 15, 1932) All but Arnold, Greene and Carpenter, the former being from Hingham, Ma. were from Salem. Including Roger Williams, all became ancestors, through marriage, in the second to fifth generations, of the the descendants of Stukely Westcott. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 15, 1932) When the whole number of settlers, including the original thirteen, had reached fifty-two, they made a first division between them of a portion of the lands upon which the city of Providence and its immediate suburbs, including Cranston, are located, allotting to each a "home lot," so called, and any outlying six-acre lot. The "home lots" each contained about five acres, and according to an old map of Providence, were located in the following order from north to south: Gregory Dexter, Mathew Waller, Thomas Painter, Edward Manton, John Greene Jr, Benedict Arnold, Francis Wickes, WILLIAM ARNOLD, THOMAS JAMES, JOHN GREENE SR, John Smith, Widow Reeve, Joshua Verin, ROGER WILLIAMS, JOHN THROCKMORTON, WILLIAM HARRIS, Alice Daniels, John Sweet, WILLIAM CARPENTER, ROBERT COLE, THOMAS OLNEY, Thomas Angell, FRANCIS WESTON, RICHARD WATERMAN, EZEKIEL HOLLIMAN, STUKELY WESTCOTT, William Reynolds, Daniel Abbott, Chad Brown, John Warner, George Rickard, Richard Scott, William Field, John Field, Joshua Winsor, Thomas Harris, Adam Goodwin, William Borrows, William Mann, William Wickenden, Nicholas Power, Widow Tiler, Widow Sayer, Thomas Hopkins, Edward hart, Matthew Weston, John Lippitt, Hugh Bewit, Robert West, William Hawkins, Christopher ------nthank and Robert Williams. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pgs. 15-16, 1932) The first BAPTIST CHURCH to be organized in America, the old First Baptist Church of Providence, was founded March, 1638/39, by ROGER WILLIAMS, EZEKIEL HOLLIMAN, WILLIAM ARNOLD, WILLIAM CARPENTER, ROBERT COLE, JAOHN GREENE, WILLIAM HARRIS, THOMAS JAMES, THOMAS OLNEY, RICHARD WATERMAN, STUKELY WESTCOTT and FRANCIS WESTON, all but John Throckmorton of "the thirteen proprietors," becoming members. This venerable church was for the first century and a half of its existence of the Six-Principle Baptist sect. The six principles, or doctrines, held by the church, may be found in Hebrews 6:1-2 (new testament). (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 16, 1932) May 12, 1642, Stukely Westcott was a party to the agreement for the division of Pawtuxet from Providence. The Arnolds settled at Pawtuxet Falls. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 16, 1932) June 24, 1635: Arrives in America, Salem, MA (8 people). 1636: Made a freeman. December 25, 1637: 1 acre granted to "Stuky Wesket" (8 people). March 12, 1638: General Court allows him to leave Salem, MA. January 5, 1639: Published in the church at Dorchester. 1639: Excommunicated from church. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, 1932) The below is the inscription on a bronze tablet to Stukely Westcott, in the house of the New England Historic-Genealogical Society in Boston, Mass. Katherine Augusta (Westcotte) Tingley of California, was a noted theosophist. Stukely Westcott settled in Salem, 1635, the year before he was made freeman. He had at least landed interests in Warwick by 1643. (The writing upon the tablet is centered and beautifully constructed-editor.) Bronze Tablet in Boston: STUKELY WESTCOTT FREEMAN OF SALEM 1636 ONE OF THE 13 ORIGINAL PROPRIETORS OF PROVIDENCE, R. I. SETTLED IN WARWICK, R. • The birth of Damaris Westcott and the marriage of her parents are recorded in the parish register of St. John the Baptist Church at Yeovil. The search was made by E. Dwelly, Hants, Eng., 1933. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 2, Pg. 76, 1939)

  • 9. JEREMIAH SR.9 WESTCOTT (STUKELY8, GUY7, EDWARD6, STEPHEN5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, GUEDO2, THOMAS1) was born 1634 in Yeovil, Somerset County, England, and died 1686 in Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He married ELEANOR ENGLAND July 27, 1665 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI, daughter of WILLIAM ENGLAND and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN.
  • Notes for JEREMIAH SR. WESTCOTT: Notes for Jeremiah Westcott, Sr.: His name first appears on the records of the town of Warwick, July 3, 1652, when probably he had just recently become of age, as having received "half an Anker of lickyor." The next record is that of July 13, 1654, when he was a witness to the deed of purchase of land from the Sachem Taccoman. On Mrch 3, 1660, he was one of the jurymen on "ye grand Inquist," of which his father was chairman, passing upon the death of an Indian, and on August 23, of the same year, posted a "twentie pound Bond to stand to ye Determination" of two men that had been chosen "to End all differences between us in case depending in ye corte." In 1664, he is recorded as having been appointed an officer of the town to take an Indian prisoner to Newport. In 1666, he was chosen to go to "Namket" and "Coeset" and warn the Indians not to plant on the town's land. He was made a freeman in 1672. Jeremiah lived on a farm adjoining that of his father which the elder Westcott had given him for life. In addition to the land his father had given him, by the will made by the town council, he was given also the John Bennett estate and other lands. Jeremiah and Eleanor were buried in the family burial ground near his farm where his father in Warwick, as was the custom in those days, made a place for him beforehand. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 34, 1932) [1647]: he was a boy just entering his teens when his parents removed from Providence to Old Warwick and it may be assumed that he was one of the children "from the age of seven," whome "Towne Orders" ruled that fathers should provide with "a Bow and two Arrowes or shots to induce them and to bring them to shooting." His father gave him a farm for life adjoining the homestead farm and here Jeremiah passed the remainder of his life. He left no will, and the town council of Warwick, as was the custom in those days, made one for him. All of his eight children were born in Old Warwick and his six sons survived him. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 155, 1932) Marriage recorded as "Westcott, Jermy and Ellen England." (Early New England Marriages Database)
  • Notes for ELEANOR ENGLAND: Notes for Eleanor England: She with her parents, William and Elizabeth England, emigrated from England following 1638 and settled at Portsmouth. They evidently came from Somerset, where England's cousin, Hugh Parsons, was born in Nether Stowey, near Bridgewater. Hugh was the son of Henry and Christianna Parsons. He came to America about 1637 on an unchartered sailing vessel. England's widow married Parsons and thus he became the step-father of Eleanor England Westcott. Mary Parsons, sister of Hugh, in 1611, married Richard Westcott. [Stukely's brother? no proof to date, 1998] (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 34, 1932) On February 2, 1691, she and her eldest son Jeremiah (Jr) deed certain land. (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 155, 1932) She was born about 1644 in Portsmouth, Newport Co, Rhode Island and died after Feb 2, 1691 in Warwick, Kent Co, Rhode Island. Her parents, William and Elizabeth England, were of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where William was one of the original settlers of 1638. The maiden name of Elizabeth is unknown. Elizabeth m(2)-Hugh Parsons from England, and had four children, among whom was Hannah who married Henry Matteson, parents of Hezekiah Matteson who married Margaret Westcott daughter of Zerobabel(3), Robert(2), Stukely(1). (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 2, Pgs. 142-43, 1939)

  • Notes for BENJAMIN SR. WESTCOTT: Notes for Benjamin Westcott, Sr.: On February 12, 1732, WILLIAM GREENE, surveyor, laid off for Benjamin, fifty-eight acres of the then allotted lands of Meshantituck, he holding "shares" or "rights" entitling him to this allotment. It is probable that he occupied this land some time before it was surveyed and laid off to him, and built upon it, for a century and a half later when the chimney of the house he erected was taken down, tow bricks were found bearing the figures "1700" plainly impressed in the plastic clay before it was baked. In January, 1735, Benjamin deeded to his son Benjamin, Jr., twenty acres, being the northerly part of the home farm. In May, 1748, he deeded to his son Jsoiah, nineteen acres, being the southerly part of the home farm, and to his son Samuel, twenty acres, being the central portion upon which stood the old house and buildings. Of the very considerable landed property owned by the earlier generations of Westcotts in Warwick and Cranston, this portion of Benjamin's farm is probably the only estate that was continually owned and occupied by the same family line as late as 1932, a period of two centuries. It is in the southerly part of Cranston, near what in old times was called "Sarle's Corners." It is now known as Oak Lawn, that being the name of the adjacent station of the New Haven railroad. To this record Judge Bullock added this pleasant comment: "In this age of youthful disquiet and cheap and rapid transit, how rare is it, and yet how pleasant, to see father and son through five generations, owning and tilling the same acres, gathering fruit from the same trees, content with the same lot, and when the end comes gathered, side by side in the same family burial place." (Stukely Westcott, Vol. 1, Pg. 36, 1932) 1720, Became Freeman.
