About Hans Jacob* Howry

He was a farmer. He lived in York County, Pennsylvania at least as early as 1739 and in Paradise Township probably from 1747. The Pennsylvania colony began to issue permits to cross the Susquehanna River and settle in what is now York County in 1733. Christ Lutheran Church in what is now York County was founded that same year. By the middle of the year there was a large number of Lutherans settled in log cabins in the Codorus and Kreutz Creek Valleys. However, settlement did not begin in earnest until 1736 when the colonial government reached an agreement with the Indians to permit it. Paradise was founded in 1747 almost exclusively by Lutherans and Calvinists from the Palatinate. This area was administered by St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Hanover. The earliest reference I have been able to locate is in 1739 when Jacob's daughter was baptized at Christ Lutheran in York. In 1743 another of Jacob's daughters was baptized at this church. A Jacob Haurie appears on a list of those who were members of Pastor Stoever's Lutheran congregation between 1733 and 1743. This reference is probably to the 1739 and 1743 baptisms of Jacob's daughters.

He and his wife were godparents to several children, Jacob once by himself. On 10 March 1745 Jacob and his wife "Urshula" were witnesses to a Lutheran baptism in York County.

He died before 25 August 1755, when his widow Ursula and son Jacob were granted Letters of Administration for his estate.
