About Harriet SATTERWHITE, West Indian and Cherokee per grandmother
GEDCOM Note
Harriet is thought to be of Native American ancestry but it is also known that she had West Indian blood as well. Her grandfather came from the West Indies so his racial makeup is UNK. There are at least 4 family sources ( Melinda Satterwhite, Theresa Satterwhite, Roger Parrish and my own mother and aunts who have stated that she was Cherokee. I think it was more likely Lumbee or Saponi. Harriet was also 1/2 sister to Moses Chavis who was also listed as Tuscarora or Lumbee. Harry's mother was said to be NA. </line><line /><line>Harriet not married to William Thorpe and may have been enslaved as a child on his fathers plantation or the nearby Satterwhite plantation. It was not uncommon during this time for Native Americans to be enslaved. It is only confirmed through family sources that Wm. M Thorp is the natural father of Sherman Satterwhite but other family members share the same anecdotal information. I have been told by several that William M acknowledged Sherman as his son at least privately.</line><line /><line>Harriet bore 13 children by vrs fathers 8 survived. </line><line /><line /><line />
