About Henry Roy Setright
Henry Roy Setright was an Australian engineer who was involved in the development of the automatic totalisator machine with Sir George Julius. He invented the automatic ticket issuing machine which was connected to the totalisator. He also developed the ticketing machine independently of the totalisator, so that it had other uses, for example, as a fare register. In 1922 he registered the patent for an electro magnetically controlled ticket issuing and printing machine. He established the company The Premier Automatic Ticket Issuers Limited in 1917, and he was closely associated with Automatic Totalisators Limited. In 1922 he sold his Australian rights in the totalisator and ticketing machines to Automatic Totalisators Limited.
In 1928 he left for Europe, where he was involved with two different companies, Universal Totalisators Limited and Automatic Ticket Issuers Limited. Setright was particularly successful in selling his totalisators and ticket issuing machines in Great Britain and in France. His ticket issuing machines were used on the London Trambuses. Universal Automatic Totalisators built a plant in Paris in 1928 to manufacture totalisators and ticketing machines. The first totalisator in Great Britain was installed at Northolt Racetrack in 1930.
