About Hermanus Steyn, d'Oude

Hermanus d'Oude was the father of President Hermanus Steyn (Hermanus d'Jonge) of the Swellendamse Republiek. He was also the 2nd Great Grandfather of President Paul Kruger, as well as the 3rd Great Grandfather of President M.T. Steyn.

Married Petronella Kemp 1731 in Cape Town. She died after the birth of their third child in 1735

1733 Briefly owned a small property at Zoutrivier

Married Martha Potgieter 26 April 1739. She was the daughter of Hans Jurgen Potgieter who died in 1737 and who was the owner of Bruintjiesrivier and 't Voorhuys. Martha and Hermanus had 13 children together.

Was a farmer in the Drakenstein district near Paarl for a while; then they moved to the Swellendam district

Rented two farms: 't Voorhuis and Bruintjes. Bruintjes was at the Breede river - he made brandy there and he cultivated grain from 1743.

1746: became a member of the heemraad of Swellendam. He became a prominent member of society there and was repeatedly elected as member in the course of the next forty years.

1760: bought the farm Combuys at the Cango river.

1762/3: bought the farm 't Voorhuys at the Breede river - made brandy there too.

Later on he was known as Hermanus d'Oude to distinguish him from his son, Hermanus d'Jonge.

Key figure in the rebellion in Swellendam in 1795 who declared the independent Republic of Swellendam at the time.

Hermanus d'Oude and Martha left the following farms in the Swellendam disctrict to their sons in the testament dated c. 1790:

- Bruintjiesfontein on the Klip river with blacksmith's shop

- Bruintjiesrivier on the Breede river with vessels and two brandy kettles (farmed here from 1743 with grain)

- 't Voorhuis on the Breede river with vessels and brandy kettle etc (first rented it, then he became the owner in 1762)

Hermanus died in 1795

In 1999, the Voorhuis farm is still owned by the Steyn family after nine generations. His son Petrus Paulus became the sole owner. The old farm house was destroyed by fire in abt 1914. Douw Steyn (1845-1926) did some repairs to the ruins and used it as an ironsmith workshop. The wine cellar remained until the nineteen thirties when it was destroyed.
