Robert was an orphan being raised by his older sister and husband and having been born in London he was as a young man an apprentice to a printer, where he learned the trade. Applying and being accepted for the Crown's gift of farm land in the South East Cape, South Africa, Godlonton took what little he had and one printing press with him, departing from Gravesend, Kent, England on 3 December 1819 on the Good Ship Chapman. Like other of the, "1820 Settlers," of the Southeast Cape, he was not able to defend his land from the indigenous natives, most of whom looked upon the white Settlers as thieves, stealing their land. They felt a right to defend their lands and country and attacked the Settlers viciously and indiscriminately and succeeded in killing a number of these, "farmers," who had maps to, "their lands." The bulk of the remaining settlers sought out the protection afforded them in an old military encampment known then as, "Grahams Town," named after Lt. Colonel Graham who had been in charge of and assigned to map the whole of the Southeastern Cape on behalf of the Crown of England. Like the other surviving Settlers, Godlon got any job he could and he accepted a position as a tax collector. In those days, tax monies on land was collectible by a field clerk who would travel to each family and location to collect the taxes. In doing so he chatted up everyone, everywhere in the SE Cape he went. He took notes, and upon return, submitted his stories to a newspaper, The Grahams Town Journal. Circulation went up whenever Godlonton's stories where in the Journal and soon he was hired to work at the paper and it wasn't long until he gave up his job collecting taxes to work at the paper full time. He saved his money and acquired the newspaper from its original owner. In addition to news and advertisement, he supplied information to all of the Settlers as to what was going on with regard to their safety in the area of the Southeast Cape. Godlonton eventually owned several newspapers and magazines and also made a salary while clerking in a bank and eventually became Chief Clerk for the High Commissioner of the Southeastern Cape. He was religious, a member of the Methodist church to which he provided goodly sums and even some of his land , upon which a church was built. His civic duty led him to write on behalf of the Southeastern Cape Settlers to readers in all of South Africa and also his material wound up in front of English Parliament and others. His first marriage ended in loss of his wife and of his only son. He remarried and finally had a son strong enough to survive in the Southeast Cape. After a long and successful career culminating with a seat on the Legislative Council, Godlonton passed away in 1884. Having taken ill he was staying in Beaufort House in Grahamstown, when he succommed. A tribute came when his bust appeared in the halls of South African Parliament for a number of years. Eventually, most of his family and relatives moved to Canada and Australia and some to Rhodesia, principally his grandson William Ayliff Godlonton, who became a successful trial lawyer in Rhodesia.
