DUCHESNE COUPLE RECEIVE WORD SONS KILLED AT WAKE

Mr. and Mrs. Arzy H. Mitchell of Duchesne, Utah received official word Monday January 7, 1946 that their sons, Howard H. Mitchell and Wayne E. Mitchell, who were left with 96 other men on Wake Island lost their lives October 7, 1943 at the hands of the Japanese.

Howard H. Mitchell was born March 16, 1918 at Vernal, Utah. He attended the Dushesne High School. He also worked in the machine shops at Moon Lake and Deer Creek. Howard left for Wake Island in June 1941 to work for the Morrison Kundsen Co., on the Pacific Naval Air Base and was rated as a mechanic first class.

Wayne E. Mitchell was born June 24, 1929 at Hayden, Utah. He also graduated from the Duchesne High School and attended the Brigham Young University at Provo and the Agricultural College at Logan, Utah. He left for Wake Island in October 1941to work for the Morrison Kundsen Company on a Pacific Naval Air Base.

Howard and Wayne took part in the defense of Wake Island and their country. Howard was wounded and -Wayne assisting until the fall of the island on December 23, 1941.

Survivors include their parents, two brothers, Truman A. Mitchell and Loren H. Mitchell and one sister, Alfreda M. Hayden of Duchesne.
