About Hugh Lee, of Northumberland County

Parents unknown. He was not the son of Thomas Lee, Sr. & Eleanor Lee

Hugh Lee who is involved with John Kent was first from MAryland and came to VA and then back to St MAry where he was the inn keeper. He married Hannah Huett relict and when Hugh died she married WM Price her servant. There are a lot of records on them in St Mary files.

Hugh Lee (I) "The Immigrant" was married to Hannah Huett (Hewett) who was the widow of Robert Huitt (many spellings found for Hewitt). Hugh (I) was born in 1609 (Baptismal Record 10-15-1609) in Cheshire, England. He married Hannah about 1648-50. Hugh (I) had died by 1661 when Hannah had taken over Hugh's shipping business and had remarried. It was thought that Hugh (I) was the father of Hugh Lee, Sr. (II), who was married to Ann Harrison (possibly Barnett), but that still has yet to be proven so we aren't sure if Hugh (I) is related to us. Our first record of Hugh Lee (I) in America is in 1645 in Kent Island and St.Mary's Co. In 1648, Hugh Lee and John Pites witnessed the will of George Higgins. The case you mention of John Barnes having given Charles Ashton's maide the pox is found in Beverly Fleet's VIRGINIA COLONIAL ABSTRACTS, VOL. I, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY RECORDS, 1652-1655 and that record also states that Hugh and Hannah Lee both gave their depositions in the case on 20 May 1653.

Hugh Lee, Jr. (III) (born ca 1670; died 1739 in Prince George Co., VA), was also married to an Ann (Tatum). Ann Tatum was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Tatum. Hugh (III) came to Charles City Co., VA about 1673 with his parents, Hugh Lee, Sr. (II), and Ann Harrison Lee. Counting Hugh Lee (I) there were four Hugh Lees in succession in our LEE line. Hugh (III) also had a son named Hugh.

The "Hugh Lee" line is one of the many Lee lines in America. There are several members of this family in the various DNA studies, so we know that it is a discrete family of its own. It's DNA haplotype is "R1B1" which is fairly common to the many Lee lines but notably vastly different from the "I1a" haplotype of the Lees of Virginia (Robert E. Lee, et. al.) and the John Lee of Nansemond (JLN) line.

This is what I know about Hugh Lee 1, gathered from various sources. If the source itself is not cited, beware the information until you prove it yourself.

There is another Hugh Lee, who is believed to have been a son of this guy, but no known proof exists (at least that I've gathered). Therefore, the DNA data exists from descendants of Hugh Lee 2, which may not accurately reflect that of Hugh Lee 1 - if the two Hughs are not kin, as suspected.

1. Hugh Lee I, the immigrant

  • b. ca 1609, Tilston, Shropshire, Shrewsbury Township, England (baptized 10-15-1609, Cheshire, England)
  • d. 1 Apr 1662, Northumberland Co, VA
  • Justice for Northumberland Co in 1655.Patented 100a there in 1650 & 288a there in 1654.In 1655, he is listed in the est of Thomas Youell as owing some 1590 pounds of tobacco.First listing of Hugh is as a witness to a will in 1645, & again in 1648 in St. Mary's Co.Hugh & Hannah donated a building that served as the first jail in St. Mary’s Co, MD. Hugh was apparently granted land 4 times in Northumberland County.First, he was granted 100a on 21 Dec 1650 for importing himself & Rose Stockwell from MD (granted 50a per person under the headright program). Then, in 1654, he patented another 288a for importing another 6 persons; but he deserted this land & lost it.He finally settled in Northumberland Co prior to 13 May 1657 for importing 22 persons, including the widow Hannah Hewitt whom he m.Hugh patented 400a in 1660 < 8 Sep 1662 [bk 2, 161].Hugh's & Hannah's birthdays are deduced from affidavits they signed in Northumberland Co on 20 May 1653 when they swore they were aged 44 & 37.
  • m1. unknown (mother of Hugh II)
  • m2. Hannah Hewitt/Huett (nee Rhodan), came to VA via MD, ca 1648-50
  • b. 1616, St. Mary’s Co, MD
  • d. VA
  • m1. Robert Hewitt
  • m2. Hugh Lee
  • m3. William Price

(there is no conclusive evidence that Hugh 1 and Hannah had kids…)

There was a Mr. Hugh Lee, Justice for Northumberland in 1655, who

patented 100 acres there in 1650, and 288 acres in 1654.

Hugh was apparently granted land four times in Northumberland County. First, he was granted 100 acres on December 21, 1650 for importing himself and Rose Stockwell from Maryland (granted 50 acres per person under the headright program). Then, in 1654, he patented another 288 acres for importing another six persons; but he deserted this land and lost it. He finally settled in Northumberland County prior to May 13, 1657 for importing 22 persons, including the widow Hannah Hewitt whom he married. Hugh patented 400 acres in 1660 before his death before September 8, 1662.

Hugh Lee I was the immigrant and progenitor of our line in the Americas. As the fifth son in his family, his legal right to inheritance was limited, providing him with justification to strike off to the new world. The link above is to some detail around documentation about Hugh and his descendants. It shows Hugh “patenting” multiple tracts of land in Virginia (receiving a grant of land in the colony from the crown for settling there).

However, you will also note within the document an attempt to link Hugh to the Lees of Shropshire. It seems that many modern researchers finding a link to the Hugh Lee line in Virginia have attempted to build a link to the more famous Lees of Stratford, Virginia (Robert E. Lee, Richard Henry Lee, etc.) who trace there ancestry through Shopshire, England. This is clearly incorrect based on the details below.

Henry Lee was born about 1583 in Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England. He was the first son on Sir Richard Lee. He married Eleanor Calveley, b. Abt 1570, of, Lea cum Newbold, Chester St. Oswald's, Cheshire, England

Children:

1. Thomas Lee, b. Cal 1612, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. 1642, of, Darnhall, Whitegate, Cheshire, England

 2. Richard Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 3. Robert Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 4. Edward Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 5. Hugh Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 6. Randel Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 7. Charles Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 8. Henry Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 9. John Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown
 10. Roger Lee, b. Abt 1600, of, Lea, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England , d. Yes, date unknown

My Notes: In the Book” Lee of Virginia, 1642-1892: Biographical and Genealogical Sketches of the Descendants of Colonel Richard Lee”, the first chapters are dedicated to exposition on the 10 principle Lee family lines in England. These families include: · Leigh of West Hall (High Leigh), Cheshire · Leigh of East Hall (High Leigh), Cheshire · Lee of Lea Hall and Dernhall, Cheshire · Lygh of Lanford and Corsley, Wiltshire · Leigh of Flamberdstone, Wilts, and the Isle of Wight · Lee of De Lee Magna, Kent · Lea of Halesowen, Salop, and Kingsnorton, Worcestershire · Ley of Bereferreres, Devon, and of Teffont Evias, Wilts · Leight of East Leigh Addington, Surrey · Lee of Hughley, Shopshire Based on Henry Lee above, our line appears to tie directly to the Lees of Lea Hall. Further research shows that Lea, Lea Hall, and Lee Hall may be synonymous, representing the family homeplace in Wynbunbury (pronounced Wem-Bree) in Cheshire.
