About Isaac Fuller

See History of Bradford County PA by David Craft, Published by L. H Everts and Co. 1878 p. 3450346

This tells the story of the settling of Ridgeberry, NY which is along Bentley Creek The hilly land was forested with rock-oak, chestnut, and white and yellow pine trees. The first settlers were Isaac Fuller and Joel Campbell in 1805 or 1806 who came from Mamakating, Orange County, N.Y. They arrived with ox-teams and cows and chose to build their homes on Bentley creek, one mile from the State Line. The Campbells moved away in 1820, but the Fullers remained there until they gained possession of the government property by settlement.

They built their homes from logs roofed in bark or shakes. They made their own maple syrup to sweeten their samp and Johnnycake, but the closest mill was 25 miles away at Sheshequin. They roasted potatoes in the ashes. Their beans were boiled in a kettle suspended over the fire by a forked stick. But they had plenty of meat: venison, bear, wild-turkey, pigeons, and grouse. The streams ran with trout.

Planting was done with a sharpened stick to make holes in which they planted seeds and used their feet to cover them with dirt. To clear the land, they formed logging bees. They used wooden bull plows and their horses pulled the backlogs for their fireplaces.

Isaac Fuller, Sr. arrived with a wife and 8 children. The younger Isaac viewed the land and then came back to bring his father's family. The younger Isaac volunteered in the War of 1812. His brother Abiel was on his way to war when it ended and he met Isaac on his way home. At least three of the Fuller children married Campbells. William was about 21 when they arrived in Ridgebury. He died in Post Creek.

Joel Campbell came to Ridgeberry with his second wife, his brother, and seven children. After Nathaniel married Beulah Fuller, they brought their children to Ridgeberry. Joel and his wife lived to be very old. Many of the Campbells joined the Church of Latter Day Saints.
