About Isabella Kinnaird
Isabella was 20 and James 27 when they married on the 5th June 1876 at her parents residence Green Island Dunedin. Witnesses John Ramage her eldest brother (Balclutha) and Isodorah Thomas of Green Island Dunedin. Isabella was a midwife and worked for may years delivering many babies. She had her own nursing home for mothers and babies in every town she moved to while James worked as a sawyer. As the work ran out the family moved on to another town. As the sons grew older they worked with James in the mills and bush. Isabella and James had 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls. She was a very immaculate person and kept her children well dressed. Her grandchildren spoke fondly of her they referred to Isabella as Nanny although some did refer to her as Granny Kinnaird. Family also said Isabella was a gifted spiritualist as when family would decide to visit her without telling her as soon as they walked in the door the table was set with a hot teapot and she would say "I've been waiting for you".
Elaine Cunliffe a grand daughter of James and Isabella has a memory of a photo of James . He had dark eyes straight Gray hair and a beard. When her father died she got rid of the photo as she didn't like his eyes. Many years later she regrets this action as no one has a photo of James
James was 16 when he emigrated to NZ with his parents Robert and Elizabeth Kinnaird nee McLeary. 2 brothers and 4 sisters on board the SEVILLA.
