Charles Ashton, of Northumberland county (born in 1625, died 1672), married Isabella. She married secondly Dominick Rice, prominent in Bacon's Rebellion. Washington and his Neighbors. Lyon G. Tyler. William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 4, No. 1. (Jul., 1895), pp. 28-43.
April, 1672. Whereas John Ashton, the heir of "Chars" Ashton, petitioned the Court that the estate of his deceased father might be divided, that he might have his portion apportioned, it is ordered that the Jury "empannelled" twelve honest men of the neighborhood, and that they, with Mr. Jno. Harris, divide the land of the said Ashton into three equal parts, and possess Dominick Rice, who married the relict of the said Ashton (in right of his said wife), with which third part he shall make choice of, and the said John with the other two parts, and the order here appoints three parties to appraise the estate of said Charles Ashton and deliver to said John Ashton his proportionable part of said estate in kind.
Upon consideration that the estate of Charles Ashton, deceased, is every day impaired by the profuseness and extravagance of Isabella, the relict of said Charles, and several other of her "complices," this court doth order that Mr. Nicholas Owen, Wm. Keene, Thomas Adams and Robt. Seth, forthwith make perfect inventory, etc.
