About Jacob Gottschalk Sachs
GEDCOM Note
Jacob Gottschalk SACHS, b. 06 Dec 1813 in Wreschen (Posen), father: trader (Handelsmann), Prussian citizen (Staatsbuerger); Prussian citizen in Glogau (Lower Silesia), citizen of Berlin on 24 Sep 1840; Posamentier (maker of trimmings) in Berlin, Sebastianstr. 21; 1850 in Berlin, Leipziger Str. 77 [NOTE: There was no family SACHS living in Wreschen in 1834/35. On the other side the surname SACHS indicates an origin from Glogau anyway - families SACHS were living in Glogau since the late 16th century, coming from Prague. In 1812, twenty-two families named SACHS were living in Glogau. So I'd think that Jacob's father was living in Wreschen for only a short while.]
Who were Jacob's parents (where does the name Gottschalk fit in)?
Good question. Maybe we can find the names of Jacob's parents in his death certificate. "Gottschalk" could have been Jacob's father's name, but it could also be a double name: "Gottschalk" ("servant of G-d") was early used as German version of the Hebrew "Elyakim" ("El is the establisher"). "Elyakim" was sometimes shortened to "Yakim", and that sounds a little like "Ya'akov". Just guessing...
J. SACHS, since 1841: Posamentier(er) [maker of trimmings], 1861-66: & Seidenknopfmacher [maker of silk buttons]; Address: 1841-42: Sebastiansstr. 26; 1843: Neue Rossstr. 20; 1844-47: Zimmerstr. 67; 1848-50: Leipzigerstr. 77; 1851-52: Jerusalemerstr. 46; 1853-54: Krausenstr. 75; 1855-63: Krausenstr. 11; 1864: Krausenstr. 69; 1865-68: Mauerstr. 93; 1870: Stralauerstr. 17.
Julius SACHS, since 1872: Kaufmann [merchant], Firma "J. Sachs jun.", Knopf- u. Kurzwarenhandlung [button and dry goods store]; 1872-74: Stralauerstr. 17. I.
I also looked for other persons named SACHS who worked as Posamentier - we cannot exclude that this trade was traditional in Jacob SACHS's family, and we don't want to miss any relative:
- A. SACHS, 1851-58: Posamentier, since 1868: Wollen- und Baumwollen-Strickgarn-Fabrik und Lager [factory and store of wool and cotton knitting yarn]; 1851: Alexandrinenstr. 17; 1852: Oranienstr. 26; 1853-54: Alte Jakobsstr. 114; 1865-68: Krautsstr. 7 - J. SACHS, 1852: Posamentier; 1852: Schuetzenstr. 25 [Maybe identical with Jacob SACHS.] - C. SACHS, 1870-72: Posamentier; 1870-72: Jerusalemerstr. 49 - J. SACHS, 1874: Posamentier; 1874: Jerusalemerstr. 49 [Identical with C. SACHS?] - J. SACHS, since 1871: Photograph [photographer]; 1871: Jerusalemerstr. 49. III.; 1872-74: Dresdenerstr. 72.73. H. I. [I've wrote down his dates as he was living at the same address.]
