A LUZADDER FAMILY HISTORY

EARLY FAMILY HISTORY

The ancestors of the Luzadder family in America once lived in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal) where the original family name was ŒLousada.¹ One member was a advisor to King Charles III of Spain. The members of this family were Sephardic Jews (the 1971 best-selling book, THE GRANDEES, #(Stephen Birmingham, THE GRANDEES (New York, Harper & Row, 1971) gives an excellent view of the Sephardim, particularly in America). During the Spanish Inquisition the family likely had three choices: (1) become practicing Catholics, (2) be burned at the stake or suffer some other deadly fate, (3) escape to another country. The Jews who joined the Catholic church were called ³conversos². Many of these ³conversos² remained secret Jews and were called ³marranos² - literally ³pigs² in Spanish. It is quite likely that Jacob De Louzada, the immigrant ancestor of our Luzadders, was such a secret Jew. Probably different alternatives were chosen by various members of the family. Some went to Portugal, like Jacob and others likely to other places, such as France, Holland, and England. One aristocratic member went to Jamaica where he was a very successful merchant, his success earning him a coat of arms which is very similar to the Duc de Losada of Spain. Jacob was probably born in Spain , fled to Portugal and then to England, along with his wife Rachel. Rachel and Jacob were married before coming to England without benefit of Jewish Rites, so were remarried in 1698 in the Spanish & Portugal Synagogue in London.

Rachel died in 1708 and in 1710 Jacob and his two young sons emigrated to New York City, where Jacob became a wealthy chocolate merchant.

In 1728 Jacob Louzada contributed f4 towards the erection of the new synagogue in New York City. In the same year the community , needing more cemetery land , purchased ³two Lotts of Land leying near the Cripple bush or swamp.² Jacob Lousada contributed to the purchase of this land with a contribution of fourteen shillings.

Jacob was buried 15 Jun. 1729 in the Chatham Square Burial grounds, New York City. His body was later moved on 9 Jun. 1856 to the 21st St. Burial Grounds to accommodate mercantile growth in New York City. Jacob¹s tombstone is inscribed in Hebrew and is translated as follows:

Tombstone of the venerable and honorable Jacob Louzada (may his rest be in glory) who went in peace to his eternal home on 15 of the month of Sivan in the year 5489 (June 12, 1729). May his soul be bound up in the bond of life Tomb of the blissful, the venerable, and honored Jacob Louzada who departed from this life to enjoy eternal glory and perfect rest on the first day of the week which was the 15 of Sivan in the year 5489. May his blessed soul enjoy glory.

Buried in The Sephardic Jewish cemetery of Congregation Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish Synagogue, which is still preserved at 55 St. James Place, opposite Chatham Square, on the southeast corner of Chinatown. However, his grave was moved when part of the Chatham Square cemetery was overtaken by street construction. His grave is now at the Cemetery of Congregation Shearith Israel at 98-110 West 21st Street across the street from the School of Visual Arts on West 21st St just off 6th Avenue. (This cemetery was adjacent to the congregation's synagogue on 19th Street--built in 1860 and now long gone.)

Bloeme Michael¹s father, Moses Michael was born in Harzfeld, Germany and died in Curacao, Tebet 25, 5500 (25 Jan 1740), aged 63 yrs. and 4 months. Bloeme was a sister of Elkalah Myers Cohen, Jochebed who married Judah Mears, Rachel who married Samuel Myers, and Rebecca who married Judah Hays.

Aaron had two children when he married Bloeme Michael. The name of his first wife has not been learned.

Aaron was a wealthy merchant and shopkeeper in New York City and later in Bound Brook, NJ. During the second quarter of the 1700¹s, he was one to the wealthiest contributors to the New York Jewish community. His recorded contributions are large, beginning with the f 4.0.0 given by him in 1728 toward building the new synagogue. In 1747, when the community instituted a new scheme of taxation, he was assessed on a par with Daniel Gomez and Nathan Levy at the generous sum of f11.13.4; only the f 14 assessments of Jacob Franks and of Mordecai Gomez exceeded it. Similarly three years later in 1750, his seat in the synagogue was assessed at the maximum figure of f 4 on a par with those of members of the Gomez family and Jacob Franks.

In the second quarter of the eighteenth century, Aaron and his brother Moses of Somerset County, NJ appear as joint contributors to Jewish communal purposes in New York and as litigants in Middlesex County, NJ.

Aaron lived in later years in Bound Brook, NJ and in 1756 subscribed f 1 toward building the Lutheran Church in neighboring Bedministertown. In 1759 he advertised in the New York Mercury , as follows:

Absconded or run-away, from Aaron Louzada, of Bridge Water, in the County of Somerset, and Province of East New Jersey, Shop-Keeper a German Servant Man, named Adam Coons of a brown complexion, long thin visage, and about 35 or 40 yrs. of age, speaks good English, wears his own hair, and was out last Cruize in the Brig Earl of London. He offered a reward of forty shillings and all reasonable charges.

In his Will, dated 7 Dec. 1764, twenty days before his death, Aaron Louzada of Bridgewater, Somerset County, New Jersey, ³being of old age² left to his wife Blume f 200 and the use of his real and personal estate to bring up his children. He directed that his children were to be put to trades. One of these children was Kitty Abrahams. To Benjamin and Abigel, children of his brother Moses, he bequeathed f 50 each. He died at Bound Brook, NJ on Friday, 27 Dec. 1764. The next days, excluding the Sabbath, were consumed in bringing his body to New York where he was buried in the Chatham Square burial grounds on Monday, Dec. 20. After ninety-one years, on 29 Nov. 1855, his body was moved to the Twenty-first Street burials grounds to make way for the southern extension of the Bowery.

His widow described his home as follows

A very convenient dwelling house, two stories high, 4 rooms on each floor, a large cellar under the while house, a convenient kitchen adjoining thereto, large storehouse, with other out houses, a good barn and barrack on the premises; with a large garden wall planked in, good bearing front orchard, with about 16 acres of good intervale and mowing ground.........also a very valuable plantation, chiefly low land, contains about 130 acres, binding on Raritan River and Middle-Creek, and joins Col Van Horn¹s low land; As also a grist-mill on tolerable good stream, and in the very heart of a good wheat country, and several other tempting conveniences, and especially for keeping store, and for erecting a fulling-mill, which is much wanted in that part, as there is none within ten or twelve miles of it, and people at this time feel the want thereof more than ever.

This Aaron changed his surname from Louzada to Luzadder. He served as a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War, first during 1776-77 in a New Jersey Regiment and later in 1778-1783 in a Pennsylvania Regiment. He fought in the battles of Long Island, Princeton, Brandywine, and Germantown. Evidence of his war service was obtained from the Archives and History Bureau, New Jersey State Library, Trenton, NJ and also from the Revolutionary War Section, Pension Claim R 6539. According to these records, ³this soldier moved from Green Co. PA to Mononghalia Co., VA.²

Judging by the birthplaces of his children, Aaron moved from Pennsylvania VA after 1791 and before 1794 when Moses, the eleventh child, was born in Virginia.

Aaron was a blacksmith and probably a farmer. It is believed that Sarah Cole, Aaron¹s second wife, was an Indian Princess, the daughter of Chief Little Bear of the Creek Indians. It has also been said that she was a Cherokee; however, the Cherokees are of the Creek Indian Nation and a tribe of the Creeks. (Per Edith Luzadder, Elwood City, IN)

The information on John L. was compiled by Edith Luzadder, his great granddaughter, of Elwood, IN. during the period 1970-76. He was dearly beloved by her father, George W. Luzadder, who spent his summers on the farm with his grandparents.

Jack served in the 23rd Virginia Infantry of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He is the only Confederate soldier buried in the Union Cemetery, Eaton, IN.

NOTE: The Luzaders, with various spellings, are descendants of Jacob De

Louzada.

1.JACOB DE LOUZADA

   Jacob De Louzada, was born in Spain about 1670 and died June 12,

1729 in Shearith, New York. He remarried Rachel de Almerda in 1698 in

the Spanish & Portugal Synagogue in London, England. Jacob and Rachel

had been married in Spain without the Jewish Rites. Rachel was the

daughter of Abraham and Sarah de Almerda.

   The De Louzada family were Sephardic Jews and during the Spanish

Inquisition, they were forced to become practicing Catholics, to be

burned at the stake or to escape to another country. The Jews who joined

the Catholic Church were called "conversos." Many of these conversos

remained secret Jews and were called "marranos" - literally "pigs".

   Jacob De Louzada was probably such a secret Jew, since he and Rachel

did remarry in a Synagogue when they had an opportunity.

   After the death of Rachel in 1708, Jacob and his two sons, Aaron and

Moses, emigrated in 1710 to America where Jacob became a wealthy

chocolate merchant in New York.

   Jacob was buried in the Chatham Square Burial Grounds in New York

City, but his body was removed on June 9, 1856 to the 21 Street Burial

Grounds to accommodate mercantile growth in New York City.

   Aaron De Louzada, a son of Jacob and Rachel (de Almerda) De Louzada,

was born in St. James Parish in London, England May 17, 1695 and died

December 27, 1764 in Bound Brook, NJ. Aaron's first wife is unknown.

About 1740, Aaron married Bloeme Michael, a daughter of Moses and

Catherine (Hachar) Michael.

   Moses De Louzada, a son of Jacob and Rachel (de Almerda) De Louzada,

was born February 2, 1700/Ol in Parish of St. James, London, England

and died about 1750. He married Hannah ------.

   Aaron (De Louzada) Luzader, a son of Aaron De Louzada, was born in

Bound Brook, NJ September 20, 1731 and died in Monongalia County VA (WV)

April 2, 1834.

   He married Mary Bartley about 1752. His second wife was Sarah Cole.

It was this Aaron that changed the spelling of his surname from
Louzada to Luzader. Aaron was a sergeant in the Revolutionary War.

He served in a New Jersey regiment during 1776-177 and later in

1778-1783 in a Pennsylvania regiment. He was in the battles of Long

Island, Princeton, Brandy-wine, and Germantown.

   According to Aaron's pension records, he moved from Greene County,

PA to Monongalia County, VA (WV). Aaron was a blacksmith and a farmer.

The Third Cemetery of Congregation Shearith Israel, Manhattan is where Aaron and Jacob Louzada are. This cemetery is also known as the 21 Street Cemetery. It is also known as the Third Cemetery of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.

To the right of Aaron Louzada is Rebecca Ashers; to his left is Esther Gomez, wife of Daniel Gomez.

To the right of Jacob Louzada is Baruch Judah. To the left, sadly, is an illegible tombstone.

Jacob was probably born in Spain , fled to Portugal and then to England, along with his wife Rachel. Rachel and Jacob were married before coming to England without benefit of Jewish Rites, so were remarried in 1698 in the Spanish & Portugal Synagogue in London.

Rachel died in 1708 and in 1710 Jacob and his two young sons emigrated to New York City, where Jacob became a wealthy chocolate merchant.

In 1728 Jacob Louzada contributed f4 towards the erection of the new synagogue in New York City. In the same year the community , needing more cemetery land , purchased ³two Lotts of Land leying near the Cripple bush or swamp.² Jacob Lousada contributed to the purchase of this land with a contribution of fourteen shillings.
Jacob was buried 15 Jun. 1729 in the Chatham Square Burial grounds, New York City. His body was later moved on 9 Jun. 1856 to the 21st St. Burial Grounds to accommodate mercantile growth in New York City. Jacob¹s tombstone is inscribed in Hebrew and is translated as follows:

Tombstone of the venerable and honorable Jacob Louzada (may his rest be in glory) who went in peace to his eternal home on 15 of the month of Sivan in the year 5489 (June 12, 1729). Jacob was Jewish and left Spain probably out of a desire for greater religious freedom. He went to London, England, and was re-married there in a Jewish synagogue. (Spain only recognized Catholic marriage at the time.)

Jacob's sons were both born in London.

BIOGRAPHY: The ancestors of the Luzadder family in America once lived in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal) where the original family name was OELousada.£ One member was a advisor to King Charles III of Spain. The members of this family were Sephardic Jews (the 1971 best-selling book, THE GRANDEES, #(Stephen Birmingham, THE GRANDEES (New York, Harper & Row, 1971) gives an excellent view of the Sephardim, particularly in America). During the Spanish Inquisition the family likely had three choices: (1) become practicing Catholics, (2) be burned at the stake or suffer some other deadly fate, (3) escape to another country. The Jews who joined the Catholic church were called ?conversosø. Many of these ?conversosø remained secret Jews and were called ?marranosø – literally ?pigsø in Spanish. It is quite likely that Jacob De Louzada, the immigrant ancestor of our Luzadders, was such a secret Jew. Probably different alternatives were chosen by various members of the family. Some went to Portugal, like Jacob and others likely to other places, such as France, Holland, and England. One aristocratic member went to Jamaica where he was a very successful merchant, his success earning him a coat of arms which is very similar to the Duc de Losada of Spain. (This information was contained in a 28 Jan 1972 letter to James L. Luzadder, Gaston, IN from Robert W. Luzadder, Assistant Wire Editor of the News-Sentinel, Ft. Wayne, IN.)
