About James Stewart
JAMES STEWART
James Stewart, here treated, is not the same person as James Stewart, "Callit of Buitte" Merchant in Glasgow
The Question of Identity
According to the Scots Peerage, James Stewart, here treated, was the son of James Stewart, fifth Lord Innermeath, and his wife Helen Ogilvy. He is said to have been 'at the horn' in 1591. Thereafter, on 26 November 1607, Patrick, Commendator of Coupar, complained to the Privy Council that James Stewart had attacked the Abbey, despoiled it of goods, and removed himself and his family. The Scots Peerage. Volume V, pp. 6-7
Marriage
Citing Macfarlane, the Scots Peerage states that James Stewart married Margaret Maule, eldest daughter of Thomas Maule of Panmure. Genealogical Collections made by Walter Macfarlane. Volume II, page 152 In the main text of the Registrum de Panmure the editor identifies her husband as James Stewart, brother-german to Johne, Earl of Atholl, but in his additional notes he identifies him as the second son of Stewart, Lord of Innermay. Ibidem: p. 7
