1873-1903: James Dawkins, d. 1905
1903-1936: Walter Bursey, son of Charles Bursey (1837-1916) verger.

I have recently been informed by a descendant of the Brown family that five generations (George, Richard, Joseph, James and James [back in time] ) served Ringwood as either Parish Clerks or Clerks to the Guardians. There is much history of interest as regards the duties and persons of Parish Clerks, many of them in their day being very great characters. This can well be imagined by any who have seen Gainsborough's painting in the Tate Gallery entitled 'The Parish Clerk'. The site for the portrait was Edward Orpin, parish clerk of Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, who died in 1781."

James Stroud, Vestry Clerk from 1828-1832 was son in law to Joseph Brown & had married Joseph's daughter, Harriet Brown. Emily -their daughter born in 1831 (see the 1841 Census, when she was 10) a minor married Robert Chilcott, Innkeeper, landlord of the Red Lion, Market Place Ringwood. The Parish Records held in the County Record office when checked, confirmed that when appointed as Vestry Clerk in 1800, Joesph Brown received a salary of £12.12.0. A notice to appoint a new Vestry clerk following Joseph's death in December 1827 was circulated and James Stroud was appointed to be the clerk on Jan. 3 1828.
An entry in 1762 referred to the appointment of James Brown as Vestry Clerk in place of James Brown. on November 28 1763 William Collins was appointed as Vestry Clerk until again James brown was appointed on November 8 1772. The last mention of James brown as clerk was Nov. 7 1791.

James Stroud was residing in Holdenhurst. The other person in his household was John Hibberd, his son. Harriett Stroud was living apart from James Stroud in 1841 in Ringwood, and in 1851 was housekeeper to George Cranston at the latter's house in West Street
