In 1858 when James' father William Griffin Wheat died, James and Mary were living on his father's farm. The property was divided into nine shares and given to the heirs. Over the next several years, James bought back all the parcels to keep the original farm intact.
James was appointed Supervisor for Pearl County, MS on April 3, 1872 by Redgeley Ceylon Power, Governor of MS. Pearl County only lasted about three years due to an insufficient tax base. In 1890 a larger area was set aside and became Pearl River County.

Wheat, James A. Poplarville, Miss., Dec. 24 – James A. Wheat, a pioneer citizen of Pearl River County, died of heart failure at an advanced age Thursday night at his home in the western part of the county. He is survived by his wife and several sons and daughters, all of whom are grown and married. City Marshal J.S. Wheat and Mrs. J.A.H. Smith, a son and daughter, who live in Poplarville, received the news this morning and left immediately for the home of the deceased.
