Biography

From the Publication "The Huguenot Society of S.C." - Periodical Transaction #52, pg 38,39. We get a very interesting idea of the beginning of this family in America from the "espousals" of Anthoine and Jeanne Elizabeth dated September 24, 1702. This marriage contract, written in French, was found years ago in an old book on the shelves of a second hand book store. This very interesting paper was published, with a translation, in Transactions #39 of the Huguenot Society in 1934. The Bans of Marriage between Anthonie Bonneau and Jeanne Elizabeth Viedau is now (2013?) on display in the Huguenot Museum in Charleston. At that time Anthoine was a cooper living in Charles Town while the Videaus were planters in nearby Berkeley County. Anthoine declared in this transaction that his clothes, body linen, and all his tools used in his trade were free of debt, and that he would receive one third of the funds, land and house under the will of his deceased father. The Videaus in giving their eldest daughter in marriage were quite generous, considering that they had been in the new land for only a short while, probably fifteen years. With the daughter they gave all her clothes and bodily linen with two pairs of new sheets, a young negress named Dal, two oxen, two cows with their calves, two sheep with their lambs, and a young colt. At the time of their marriage in 1702, Jeanne Elizabeth was seventeen, and Anthoine was in his early twenties.

The will of Anthoine Bonneau, husband of Jeanne Elizabeth Videau Bonneau mentioned her father, Peter Videau, and identified him as the grandfather of Bonneau's oldest son. The will of Captain Anthoine Bonneau (1680-1742) was signed on 20 Feb 1742 and proved on 8 Feb 1743. The will, extracted: Item-Since my eldest son Anthony has reached the age of majority I have given him lands and slaves to the full of his share and portion. I now give and bequest him five pounds current money and the sixteen acres of land I had of his grandfather Mr PETER VIDEAU deceased.

Attached below, from the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, The betrothal agreement of Anthoine Bonneau and Jeanne Elizabeth Videau. On 24 Sep 1702, they met at her father’s house where Anthoine Bonneau “had come with the express purpose of seeking in marriage the eldest daughter of Mr. Videau…Mr. Videau and his wife have testified that they have found his request agreeable, and that if their eldest daughter Jeanne Elizabeth consents, they will grant his request with pleasure.”
