About Sir Lord Jerome Lindsay, of Annatland
(1) Lindsay, Margaret Isabella, The Lindsays of America, Albany, NY: Joel Munsell's Sons, 1889, pp. 20-21:
. . . Sir Jerome or Hierome Lindsay of Annatland, Jerome and Hierome being identical in those days, . . . married first, Margaret Colville, daughter of a Scottish Knight of Colville, by whom he had a son David (afterward the Reverend David Lindsay), baptized the 3d of January, 1603, the year of the union of the crowns of England and Scotland, and who was the founder of our family in America.
That which gave the bishop's son the most fame was his second marriage with his distant kinswoman, Agnes Lindsay, daughter of Sir David Lindsay of The Mount, and the great-niece of the celebrated Sir David Lindsay the Poet, and Lion King at Arms. . . . On this alliance with Agnes Lindsay, the heiress of The Mount, he became Sir Hierome Lindsay of The Mount, and was shortly after appointed Lord Lion King at Arms, making the fourth and last Lindsay who held this important and honorable office.
(2) Lindsay, Lord, Lives of the Lindsays, London, England: J. Murray, 1849, vol. 1, p. 428:
AMERICA, VIRGINIA - Descended, according to a family MS., from the Lindsays of the Mount, the genealogy being thus stated: - Sir Hierome Lindsay, - father of Sir David L. of the Mount, - father of Robert L., the first emigrant to America, - father of Opie L., - father of Robert L., - father of William L., [And of Opie L. of the Mount, Fairfax Co., Virginia, and Thomas Lindsay] - father of George Walter L., - father of Capt. Geo. F. Lindsay, U.S. Marines, present representative of the family. - It is evident from the tradition that the descent from the Mount family must be subsequently to the date of Sir Hierome, or, as he is generally styled, Sir Jerome's marriage with the heiress, he, Sir Jerome, being specified as the original ancestor; and, as it appears on counting the generations backwards that Robert Lindsay, the first emigrant, was of the same generation with David Lord Balcarres, there can be little doubt that the said Robert was a younger son of Sir Jerome, the latter belonging to the generation of John Lord Menmuir, father of David Lord Balcarres. - That the name of Sir Jerome's father-in-law, Sir David L. of the Mount, has been misplaced in the above pedigree, might be proved by existing legal evidence. The Virginian Lindsays are thus a branch of the House of Edzell, through the family of Arznatland, which see. . . .
ANNATLAND. - See Lives, tom. i. p. 394. - Descended of Edzell. - Walter younger of Edzell, who ? 1513, had issue Alex., his second son, - father of David, minister of Leith and Bishop of Ross, ? 1613, - father of Sir Jerome L., first of Duninno, afterwards of Annatland, Lord Lion King-at-Arms, ? 1642, who married first, Marg. Colville, who ? before 10 May, 1603, and had issue David, baptized 2 Jan. 1603; secondly, Agnes, d. of Sir David L. of the Mount, Lion King, and had issue James L. of the Mount, so designed in 1643 and afterwards, Clerk of the Exchequer in 1661, and who ? 1674. - Lindsay of the Mount, 1710. - See America.
