  • Peter Tallman (1623 - 1708) was originally from Hamburg, Germany. He settled first about 1647 at Barbados, where he married his first wife Ann Hill, then in 1649 relocated to Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Peter and Ann were divorced in 1665 based on alleged infidelity of Ann, producing a child by another man. Peter Tallman then married Joan Briggs in July, 1665. Our descent is from Peter and Joan's son Benjamin (1684 - 1759) and his wife Patience Durfee, via their son William, born in Rhode Island, who married Anne Lincoln and lived at Reading in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Of eleven children born to William and Anne Lincoln Tallman, only Benjamin lived to adulthood, to marry and have children of his own. Ben Tallman married Dinah Boone, daughter of Benjamin and Susannah (Liken) Boone in 1764 in Berks County.

An antenuptual agreement was made 24 July 1665, between Petter Talman of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Joan Brigges of Taunton, then in the jurisdiction of Plymouth Colony.[1] This was Peter's second marriage.[2]

Joan Briggs was b about 1640, probably based on the date of her marriage and died about 1685, because Peter remarried about 1685.[3] A specific date of July 24, 1685, is sometimes given for her death. Do you have a source for this date?

Conflict

IF Joanna was born in 1640 in Taunton, she CANNOT be daughter of John of Taunton. His sons were born in 1642-1645 in England and came over with him prior to 1657. And there was another totally different Briggs family in Newport/Portsmouth, RI

Note NI25 QUESTION: Who were Joan's parents? Were they John Briggs and Agnes Thayer?

From Ancestry.com, "Descendants of Tunis Wells and Other Surnames", by Dave Wells: "Her father is John Briggs Sr. according to some sources. Joan's birth date is not known. July 24, 1665 an ante nuptial agreement was made between Peter T. and Joan B. He agreed to give her land he had bought from Richard Morris, Daniel Wilcox and William Wilbur and also a house, all to be hers and her heirs born of this marriage. He gave her beside a bed and half the household goods, but if she die without issue the estate given her was to revert to Peter Tallman's eldest son, viz. Peter Jr., and if the latter die without issue then to Peter Tallman Sr's eldest daughter viz. Mary and her heirs. To Joan, absolutely as a "free gift of donation" he gave 3 good cows and a good breeding mare. Joan Briggs died 1685. Her son Benjamin was born in January of that year, so it is possible that she died in childbirth. Since Taunton was a branch of the Plymouth colony and since a Briggs came over in the "Fortune" in 1621, we can feel there is a possibility that Joan was connected with the Puritans of the Plymouth colony, but there is no proof. "

The foregoing account of Peter T's family is taken from "The Tallman Family" contributed to the New England Genealogical and Historical Register by G. Andrews Moriarty. 15 Joan Briggs 2nd wife of Peter T. The following letter to Miss Helen Swisher, Columbus, O., dated 1934, seems to dispose of all inquiries about Joan Briggs: Dear Miss Swisher: Replying to your letter of the 9th instant, I would say that the ancestry of Joan Briggs is not known. As you are perhaps aware the Taunton town records were destroyed about 100 years ago by fire. A son of Clement Briggs of Weymouth was (end p 23) settled in Taunton but Joan could not have been his daughter as she was too old and Clement does not mention any daughter Joan in his will. It is my belief , however, that she was related to this family. In a later number of the Register you will find a note of mine on the family of Ann Hill, (first wife of Peter Tallman) with data from the Essex Co., Va. records. Yours faithfully, 1934 G. Origins

Based on the date of the ante nuptial agreement and traditional marriage ages for females of that time period and place, we estimate her birth year to be about 1645, or a range between 1640-1647.

Her ante nuptial agreement also calls her "of Taunton." There was one Briggs family in Taunton at that time, making immigrant John Briggs Sr, who emigrated with known sons by 1657. He is the most likely candidate for her father. Depending on when he immigrated, and when she was actually born, she was born in either England or in Taunton. (Note: there was another Briggs family in Rhode Island, but this document clearly calls her "of Taunton" to distinguish her from the Rhode Island family.)

An ante nuptial agreement was made 24 July 1665, between Petter Talman of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Joan Brigges of Taunton, then in the jurisdiction of Plymouth Colony.[1] This was Peter's second marriage.[2]

Death

Joan Briggs Talman died by 1685 when Peter remarried.[3] A specific date of July 24, 1685, is sometimes given for her death. What is the source for this date?

She gave birth to a son Benjamin in January 1685, [citation needed] so perhaps she died due to complications of that birth.
