Changed name from Johan Hammwitz Arrived in London in 1838 after being a travelling journeyman tailor 1828-1838 (after investigation it appears that Johan didn't change his name as his father was Conrad Bartels), the family originate from the Duchy of Brunswick near Hanover, and he came to the UK in 1838 via Boulogne in France. He was employed by the His Majestys 8th Irish Hussars as regimental master tailor which may explain the travelling and different birthplaces of his 6children.≤br>≤br> Johan died in 1879 in Patricroft near Manchester, his son William Alfred was executor of his Will with a personal Estate under £1000.
