Heidelburg Evangelical Lutheran Church aka the Old Dutch Meeting House

located between Mocksville and Salisbury, Rowan CO, North Carolina, it is near Heidelburg Settlement, North Carolina on Comatzer Road at Homer Potts Road.

Church records date back to 1766. The last service was around 1860. The only remains of the church are the foundation stones [which are still in place], an unattended cemetery, a record book, and a weathervane.

The record book is located in the Lutheran Church Museum, Salisbury, North Carolina. The weathervane had been sent from Germany and is a cock, a reminder of Peter's denial of Christ. It is displayed in the Rowan County Museum, Salisbury, North Carolina.

All day services were held once a month. One account says that the church was burned by Indians in 1765.

They did not have or bring German ministers so the German school teacher was the speaker and read to the congregation. The first records were written in German. They sang from the German Union Hymn Book. The cemetery had iron gates, but they are gone. All that remains of the cemetery is the granite gateposts and some headtones which are readable but buried in the ground. It is up on a hill near the church. The cemetery is surrounded by a rock wall. The Kobs', the Harrowoods'. and the Glucks' attended there.

"Nicholaus Kob, whose name soon became Nicholas Cope, came with his family sometime before the Revolution and squatted on land just above the Harrowood ford. He and his family seem to have been substantial people as his will indicates, but the long and difficult procedure involved in buying land and perhaps more importantly the continuing quit rents due every year kept them from owning the land. After the Revolution they bought it from the State, which had confiscated it from Lord Granville. The money received by Nicholas for furnishing the patriots and by his son Phillip for service in the American forces may have helped with the purchase price."

"The Copes and the Harrowoods not only established homes and made farms, they are soon recorded as attending the "Old Dutch Meeting House" some seven miles up the road along with neighbors such as the Glucks whose descendants many years later after the name became "Click" helped manage the (Cooleemee) plantation."

[CopeHart Family 1.FTW] Headstone reads, "1785, Dei Augustist Gesto Ben Nicola Us Kob" (per Katherine James web site. Also from the same source: "Nicholas Kob, whose name soon became Nicholas Cope, came with his family some time before the Revolution and squatted on land just above the Harrowood Ford. He and his family seem to have been substantial people as his will indicates, but the long and difficult procedure involved in buying land and perhaps more importantly, the continuing quit rents due every year kept them from owning the land. After the Revolution they bought it from the State which had confiscated it from Lord Granville. The money received by Nicholas for furnishing the patriots and by his sone Phillip for service in the American forces may have helped with the purchase price." The Cope's and Harrowood's not only established homes and made farms, but they are soon recorded as attending the "Old Dutch Meeting House" some seven miles up the road along with neighbors such as the Glucks whose decendants many years later after the name became "Click" helped manage the plantation. John Nicholas setteled in NC in Davie County, which was originally part of Rowan County, NC. He is buried in Cope Cemetary #1 and the inscription is in German and spells the family name as "KOB". According to the "NC Revolutionary Accounts" (Vol.VII, p.83, folio 4, p.84, folio 1 in the State Archives in Raleigh, NC), Nicholas was paid for services; this identifies him as a patriot during the American Revolutionary War. This evidence establishes eligibility for DAR/SAR membership. Nicholas and other family members are buried in the Cope Family Cemetary in Davie Co., NC which is locted in the Pioneer Cemetary on the Thousand Trails Forest Lake Preserve in Advance, NC. Headstone reads "1785 Dei Augustist Gesto Ben Nicola us Kob".
