Bate family reading
The Origin of Capitalism in England, 1400–1600
By Spencer Dimmock a John, Andrew, and Heny Bate in Lydd Henry was a butcher and had 4 daughters
Andrew appears to be a partner, per Dimmock. He also talks about Andrew Bate-vicious and intimidating.
Henry Bate will of 1478 mentioned page 256 Left money to 4 daughters and wife also mentioned (no name in this book).

Harding claims that Thomas' son John died in 1522. Source : Harding, Louis B., _Bates_, unpublished family notes.
Newton Bates writes, "It is possible that this John, son of Thomas, is the ancestral John who died in 1522. If this conjecture be correct the line would be through Thomas Bate." (P. 2.) Given Harding's claim that this is correct, it seems reasonable to consider accepting Newton Bates' lineage.
John Bate of Lydd died in 1522. He was Jurat of Lydd, and left about 20 pounds to the Lydd church in his will.

Will
Date: 31 JUL 1522
Place: Lydd, Co. Kent, England
Note: 'John Bate of Lydd, county Kent, England, jurat, in his will, dated July 31 and proved Sept. 17, 1522, names his sons Thomas and Andrew as executors, mentions the wife of Andrew and Joan the daughter of Andrew. England was a Catholic country at this time and the will provides bequests for the high altar, for the reparation of the church, to a priest to sing for his soul, to poor people for the health of his soul for five years next after his death, for a dirge for his soul, for four masses, one each of 'Our Lady,' of the Trinity, of the Holy Ghost and of Requiem, and as many at his month's day and twelve month's day, and provides payment for the priests for singing these masses.[4]
Wife
Re wife Sara Roberts of John Bate, of Lydd
The big question is who was John Bate Bates son of Sir Thomas Bates' (born about 1460) wife.
Was it Margaret John or this lady Sarae Roberts born in ~1434? Both appear and are "confirmed" in various on line trees. Sarae was born about 1434 making her approximately 26 years older than John. That would have been very strange at that time (or even now). But the deal breaker for Sarae was that Andrew was born in ~1494 in every tree i've seen. The lady would have been 60! To me it seems clear that Sarae is not John's wife or Andrew's mother. I don't now where if anywhere she fits in the Bates family tree. In addition there are probably dozens of trees on line that have this lady in them but almost none list either a husband or child's name. When you find either it is a child's name but even that is rare. On the other hand Margaret John appears in a bunch of trees attached to this site. However, I can find little about her except that her father is supposedly Edward John and mother Elizabeth Woodville. i am trying to research them further and if anyone has any information on Margaret John and family I would be most interested.
