"ANDREW of Lydd, although he apparently died in the parish of St. Nichol as in the nearby town of Romney, who with his wife is mentioned in his fat her's will, made his will Feb. 22, I532/3. In it he appoints William Tadl ow and Robert Robyns his executors and states that his children William, J ohn, Katherine and Thomas are not twenty years of age and that Katheri ne is not married. He makes bequests for the high altar and the reparati on of the church at Lydd, for the maintenance of "Jesus mass," for the purchase of two printed books called "Antiphonacs" for t he church, for dirge and mass at his burial and month's mind mass, for dirge and mass for his wife at her year's mind mass, for himself and wi fe at his year's and two year's mind mass. Bequests were made to his child ren and to other persons of lands and tenements, of horses, oxen, kine, he ifers, shoats and many ewes, of farming tools, of wheat, barley, oats a nd beans, of wearing apparel and beads.

(V) James Bates, son of Thomas Bates, was baptized at Lydd, December 2, 15 62, died there, 1614. Children: Robert, Mary, Rachel, James, mentioned bel ow; Thomas, Edward, of Weymouth, Massachusetts; Clement, of Hingham, Massa chusetts; Isaac. Anna, Mathew, John, Joseph.
(VI) James (2) Bates, son of James (1) Bates, was born in England, Decemb er 2, 1582. When he emigrated to America he was fifty-three years ol d. He came with his two brothers, his wife Alice, then aged fifty-two, dau ghter Lydia, aged twenty, daughter Marie, aged seventeen, Margaret, twelv e, James, nine, sailing in the ship "Elizabeth." April 17, 1635. He was gi ven the prefix "Mr.," indicating superior rank socially. He became a husba ndman or planter at Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was admitted a freema n. December 7, 1636: was selectman in 1637, and afterward deputy to the ge neral court and ruling elder of the church. He died in 1655 and his wil l, proved February 17, 1655, bequeaths to wife Alice, sons Richard and Jam es and daughter Margaret Gibson. His widow died August 14, 1657. Childre n: Richard, of Lydd. (VII) James (3) Bates, son of James (2) Bates, was born December 19, 162 4, at Lydd, county Kent, England, and came to America with his parent s. He settled at Haddam, Connecticut, with other Dorchester men, and marri ed Ann Withington. daughter of Henry Withington, of Dorchester, one of t he founders of Dorchester. Bates appears from the records to have go ne to England in 1655, doubtless to settle matters connected with his fath er's estate. He soon returned. He was one of the founders of the chur ch at Haddam. In 1669 he was in the adjoining town of Saybrook, Connecticu t. He was a deputy to the general court in 1671 and later. Children: Samue l, mentioned below; John; Hannah; James, born April 15, 1662; Margaret, ba ptized June 19, 1664; Mary, baptized March 6, 1666, married William Houg h; Elizabeth.
(VIII) Samuel Bates, son of James (3) Bates, was baptized at Dorchester, J une 18, 1648. He was a legatee in the will of his grandfather, Henry Withi ngton, as was his mother Ann. He lived at Saybrook and died there Decemb er 28, 1699. He married (second) May 2, 1676. Mary Chapman, daughter of Ro bert Chapman. Children, born at Saybrook: Samuel, April 4 or 16, 1677; Ann e, September 19, 1678; Silence, July 27, 1680; Samuel, November 8, 1682; J ames, mentioned below; Robert, December 23, 1686; Stephen, June 1, 1689; E phraim, May 29, 1692; Daniel, August 28, 1697.
(IX) James (4) Bates, son of Samuel Bates, was born at Saybrook, Decemb er 16, 1683. He lived at Saybrook and died at Haddam quarter, March 13, 17 18. His land was divided among his three sons. Children, baptized at Saybr ook: Sarah, April 9, 1711; Samuel, December 20, 1712; James, March 27, 171 5; John, mentioned below.
(X) John Bates, son of James (4) Bates, was baptized at Saybrook. Mar ch 3, 1717. He moved to Bedford and Granville. Massachusetts, where he di ed March 31, 1782. He married Edith Wood. His will was dated April 14, 177 7, and proved April 2, 1782, bequeathing to wife and children. Children: H annah, born July 28, 1742; John, November 20, 1743; Nathaniel, mentioned b elow; Jacob, November 2, 1746; David, March 4, 1750; Elizabeth, April 2 6, 1752; Edith, March 17, 1754.
