John Brown, Third of Fordell and First of Finmount. He married 1st Katherine Melville, a daugher of the family Melville of Raith.

Katherine, who obtained on July 1,1549 on her fathers forfeiture, a charter of Shawmill from David Hamilton, son of the governor of Arran. She was 1st married to Robert White of Maw, without Issue; secondly, to John Brown of Fordell, by whom she had a son John who was re toured by her February between 1558 and 1559.

She had the lands Ballabourn, in the barony of Easter Elco, County of Perth and a part of Alva, County Clackmannan. in life-rent from her 1st husband, but the latter was redeemed from her and her brother in law in 1555, for 1000 merks by Menteith of Kerse. Katherine Melville was dead before October of 1558, when her husband has discharge from John Quhyte of Easter Lumbenny for 500 merks, part of the price of the lands at Alva on January 26, 1560-61, there is recorded a contract between John Whyte of Lumbaine Easter, brother heir of Robert Whyte of Bannathill, on the part, and John Broun of Fordell, spouse of the deceased Katherine Melville, who was a relict of said Robert Whyte, discharging in favor of John Broun an obligation (on which there was a decreet-arbitral on March 17,1547), incurred by the said Kahterine to said John Whyte, for 1620 merks, which sum had been laid out on land by the said Robert Whyte for her conjunct-fee, but was now paid by the said John Broun, who had assumed responsibility therefor, with his coutioners, Thomas Moubray of Barnbaugal and Archibald Dundas of Fingask. The Contract was dated at Orwell, August 1560.

He made his will 8th May 1602, at Fordell, nominating his sons Robert and David executors, and died 2d July following, having had, besides his legitimate offspring, a " bastard son natural," Nicoll Broun, who was dead 2d March 1622, when Mr. Robert Brown of Pitkenny had a gift of his escheat.
