About John Byington

AKA Boynton

ii. John, s. Caleb, bp. Apr. 9, 1678 (Newbury VR)

Born John Boynton, evolved phonetically as "Byintun" in Branford, CT Colony, and became "Byington" with his children. Found here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rlord335&...

Had reference in Branford town records to his witnessing a deed for Nathaniel Finch in 1702, with parenthetical note of "alias Bedle", believed to refer to a minor parish official position of "beadle", which position was responsible for preserving order in meetings. This is intuitively borne out by further reference in the Branford records to his "giving notice" of an impending town meeting in 1699, leading to a conclusion that he may also have functioned as the town crier.
