First Generation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. John Cory I1 was born on 9 Oct 1611 in England. He died on 7 Mar 1685 in Southold, Suffolk Co, Long Island, NY. Just where John I came from, in the old world, as of the publication date of the Second Edition of "Corys Of America", has not been proven satisfactorily or strong enough to say at this time. He may have arrived in America on the Ship Planter. Some of the first researchers of the Cory Genealogy tried to prove that he came from Bramerton Hall near Norwich, England. It is also believed that he came to America about 1637. He may have lived in Salem, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The latest theory is that he was the John Cory that was in Rhode Island and left under strange circumstances. Also that he may have been the father of William of Portsmouth. We believe that John was one of the men who assisted John Youngs on October 21 1640 in the organization of the First (Presbyterian) Church at Southold, LI., New York. John Cory is mentioned as being from Southold and as the Whale Commissioner 7 March 1644. The Will of John CORY I, dated 1 February 1685. Proved 2 October 1685. A project was undertaken by the Cory Family Society to determine the genetic relationships between Cory/Corey family lines in North America and Britain by analyzing Y-chromosome markers. The wish: to learn whether or not the progenitors: William of Portsmouth, John of Long Island, and Thomas of Chelmsford were genetically related. Each had arrived in America during the period 1635-1645. Also to learn where in Britain the progenitors lived before arriving in America, and to what current Cory lines in Britain they might be related. From "The Corey Family", by Lucy Dubois Akerly, 1900:"John Corey, of Huntington, son of John Corey, of Southold, from which place the former went to Huntington, perhaps as early as 1659. He bought ahome lot there, on 7 July, 1663, and was granted land in 1668, 1681 and 1682. He was, at one time, one of the owners of number nine of the ten farms, and afterwards of number ten. He is said to have been a Quaker, and was a man of considerable importance at Huntington, being Recorder, Town Clerk, Arbitrator, etc. The inventory of his estate amounting to #82 and 10 shillings was dated 25 Jan., 1685-6. (See Huntington Town Records, and the Suffolk County History). John Corey married at Huntington, on 15 Dec 1667, Mary Cornish, who m 2d, John Sammis (see above [reference is to John Sammis, the husband of Abigail Corey, John Corey's sister]); she survived both of her husbands and is mentioned on 9 April 1696, by her son John Corey, as then living. A Joseph Corey is mentioned in Thompson's History of Long Island, as a resident of Huntington about 1666. No such man being found in the early Records of the Town, Joseph may safely be considered as a misprint for John."
