About John Daniel Wienholt
The 1861 census records John Daniel aged 6 living with his parents and three siblings at 30 Westbourne Park Terrace, Paddington, London (which became Porchester houses in 1912). Although his 7-year-old sister was born in Paddington, he was born in Germany, presumably at the family home of his mother in Hamburg, although the record simply states Germany. Less than four years later the family fortunes had changed irreversibly when his father died in Australia.
Year and place of marriage, and wife's name, from Australia Marriage Index (Online at Ancestry.com. Exact date not given). Date and place of death from Australia Death Index (accessed through Ancestry.com Australia) which confirms he is the son of Daniel and Helene.
His nephew, R.G.W. Stark, remembers him thus in his memoirs (written around 1935):
"I also remember my grandmother's eldest son, Mother’s only brother, John Wienholt (“Jack the Dreamer” as Aunt Emma, Mary Bowen’s mother called him in her old age) from Australia, visiting us. I liked him. He had lost one eye from a gunshot wound. He is still alive with his wife Aunt Mollie, at the Cottage, Ipswich Rd, Brisbane. I heard from them this Christmas. He was addicted to spiritualism, not I imagine in the practical way of calling up spirits! but interested deeply in it."
