About John Garrett, of Upper Darby
Not the same as John Garrett, of Nansemond County
"John Garrett of England & wife Mary did indeed have a son John b. 10 Jan 1631. But this John stayed in England & had 2 children born 1662 & 1666, John & Mary respectively , in Leicestershire, England whose birth are registered. "As I understand only William, s/o John (by the late Ann Dunston) & Mary, went to America & settled in PA.[1] Adding to the above controversy, a couple of different Garretts claiming ancestors from Leicestershire are not matching according to the yDNA project."

Biography

JOHN GARRETT I (1595-1680). Born in Suffulk, Greater London, England. PARANTAGE IS NOT PROVED John was born between 1595 and 1600 in London, England. His parents are unknown. His first wife was Ann Dunston from which he had a son, John Garrett II who was born on January 10, 1631. Ann likely died in childbirth. John’s second wife was Mary Bibble. John, documented as a bricklayer, and likely poor. He became an indentured servant to his brother-in-law from Ann Dunston, John Dunston, leaving his baby and new wife and children. John Garrett was sponsored by John Dunston, and 'transported' to Jamestown, Virginia Colony, British America (exact date unknown). He returned to his wife and children and made a second trip in 1639 back to Virginia to his wife, Mary Bibble and children. The family traveled back to Virginia in 1639. Seven years would have passed, so he might not have been indentured any longer. He Later moved from Jamestown to Pennsylvania. He married Mary Barwell (1612-1680), said to be of royal blood and disinherited because she married a Quaker, who was also poor. They both died in Pennsylvania.
[Lord] [SIC] John GARRETT, I was 12 years old when the first English immigrants landed at Jamestown; was 25 years old when the Mayflower landed; was 29 years old before Galileo told the Pope that the earth revolved around the sun rather than the other way around.
He, and 7 of his children immigrated to Pennsylvania between 1650 and 1680. It appears that he immigrated before his children did in 1684. Records of Early Philadelphia Residence list all of John’s children (except John II) as well as himself. They were heavily involved in the Quaker movement
He died in America on August 31, 1680 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
