About John Gibson, Jr

A son of John & Rebecca (Thompson) Gibson. He married Rebecca Harrington/Errington on December 09, 1668 at Cambridge, MA.

John was the 4th child of immigrants John and Rebecca Gibson.

He had 3 older sisters and a younger brother. He married Rebecca Errington on December 19,1668 in Cambridge, MA and began a family of his own. He, his parents and sisters had been involved earlier in the decade in a scandalous episode of witchcraft accusations in which his family had suffered much financially , emotionally, and socially.

Some of the family had left Cambridge to start new eventually to Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky. He stayed in Cambridge and started a family. His step-grandfather encouraged him to join the militia and as an officer to repair the family's status.

Unfortunately, he was killed on October 15, 1679, leaving a wife and small children behind. The culture of the day lent itself to long memory and suspicious judgment leaving his widow with limited recourse. No man, single or widower, would marry the widow of the family which had possible connections to witchcraft.

It didn't help that his sister, Rebekah (most linked with the paranormal) had died the year before. Sadly, Rebecca was found to be an unsuitable mother by the church and lost her children to be cared for by a "suitable" family in the church.

He did come from a paternal line of very long livers. His father, Sir John Gibson, may have been one of the earliest Scottish immigrants to the New World around 1631. His father left nobility and wealth in Scotland in favor of his "freethinker" Presbyterian faith. His father lived until 1694 and died at age 93.
