1)John Hancorn SMITH, born 1805 in England, arrived at the Cape in Willson's party of 1820 Settlers, died before 1871 at Melville Park. He acquired Melville Park in 1841 from James WARD. At the time of his youngest son’s baptism, he is described as Field Cornet, Grahamstown married. Mary Anne STRINGFELLOW, born circa 1817 in England, arrived at the Cape in Bailie's party of 1820 Settlers, died 16 November 1871 at De Beer's New Rush, Kimberley.

Jan 6 JH SMITH begs leave to inform the inhabitants of Grahamstown and vicinity that he has taken out a wholesale spirit licence, and has at present for sale, good old Cape brandy, bottled ale and Porter, and few hogsheads of Letterstedt's superior Pale Ale and will shortly receive foreign wines and spirits which will be sold at reduced prices.
