Shelby's Brigade

"I am, Mrs. B.E. Foster of Hunt County, Texas. I am 74 yeras old and have lived in Texas for 55 years and in Hunt County for 36 years. John Campbell Hoge was my brother. I was 12 years old when he entered the Confederate war and I remember he came home 2-3 times during the war wearing a confederate uniform. I remember hearing him relate incidents and the hardships endured while serving in the confederate army. He was with the Calvary and I remember he often spoke of belonging to Shelby's brigade. He joined the Confederate Army at Neosha, Newton County, Missouri in 1862. He rode his own horse and came home 2-3 times during the war and on one occasion, his horse was shot. I saw the horse after he was crippled and heard my brother J.C. Hoge say he was shot by the Yankees.
