"The birth and death records for this family at Dorchester are open to suspicion. Note that several of the events are placed in April, without a day of the month stated; this suggests that when in 1644 a member of the Phillips family was questioned about events that had taken place some years earlier, the answers were rough estimates taken from memory. There are two Marys with recorded dates of birth and death, which would require third Mary to be born to this family, but not recorded, and this Mary could be no more than about fifteen when she married George Munjoy. Since there is a son John born in 1635, who is not seen in any later record, but who does not have an early record of death, it may be that the death recorded in April 1636 for the second Mary should actually apply to this John and then the Mary born in 1636 would be available at age about seventeen to marry Munjoy. Also, the death date for the first Mary would seem to be wrong."

Biography

John Phillips, origins unknown, born about 1605, based on age at death; emigrated in 1630, settling initially in Dorchester, then Boston (by 1652? certainly by 1656). Anderson suggests that he might have been a passenger on the Mary & John.

He was a biscuit maker and occasionally served as recorded at Wells court. He was also referred to as a millwright. He died in Boston 16 Dec 1682. He married first by 1633 Joanna ____; she died in Boston 22 Oct 1675, age 80. He married second by 1676 Sarah (____) Maynard who survived him.

According to Richard Ripley whose information is often unreliable, John Phillips and Joan arrived at Massachusetts Bay Colony 1623-1630, prior to the arrival of the Winthrop fleet, and were in fact the first of the Phillips family to arrive in America.
