In the name of God Amen This Twenty Seventh day of November in the year of our lord 1771, I John Price of the County of Essex being in perfect mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in the manner following--- Item, I lend to my daughter Catherine Boulware one negro girl named Lucy during her life and after her death the negro so lent with all her increase to be equally divided between my daughters children. Item, I lend to my wife one negro girl named Sarah during her natural life or widowhood and the increase of the said negro while in my wife's possession to go with the rest of my estate and after my wife's decease I give the girl Sarah to my daughter Susannah with all her increase after possession whether by descent or delivery but if she die without issue of her body lawfully begotten the said with all her increase to be equally divided between my sons here after named. Item, I lend to my beloved wife Ann Price all my negroes namely, Bristol, Bett, James, Ben, Harry, Ned during her natural life or widowhood and after my wife's decease or marriage the said negroes to be equally divided between all my sons, Namely, Thomas Price, Richard Price, William Price, and John Price, but if any of my sons die without issue of the body lawfully begotten their part to be equally divided between the rest. Item, I give to my son-in=law Stark Boulware one-half of my tract of alnd in Cumberland County to be equally divided the other half of the said tract I lend to my wife during life or widowhood and after her decease to be equally divided betweeen my sons above named. Item, my land in Essex whereon I live to be sold at the discretion of my Exors. I give to each of my three children William, John, and Susannah, one feather bed and furniture and a cow and calf and the rest of my estate [after payment of my debts] I lend to my wife during her widowhood and after her death or marriage to be equally divided among all my children and lastly I constitute and appoint my wife and John Lee Executors of this my last will and testament. ________________________ 4 Jun 1772 -

In 1787 a suit was brought in Cumberland Chancery Court regarding the division of land owned by John Price born 1719. Heirs living at that time included his only living son John Price and children of brother Richard Price , Archibald Wright guardian. Archibald Wright was the second husband of Mary DeJarnette widow of Richard Price. Brother Thomas Price was deceased leaving a son John Price b. 1759. Son William died without heirs.

There is an error which appears to indicate this John Price is the son of Joseph Price. That is not accurate. John Price son of Joseph Price is a different person as shown by the Cumberland County Virginia Chancery Court Records.


The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia page 102 shows John Price b 29 Mar 1719 was the son of John and Jane. The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County page 79 shows John Price married Jane Smith 1 May 1705. The Parish Register of Christ Church Middlesex County Virginia page 170 shows John Price married Ann Younger 17 June 1737.

Misinformation is found in many family trees concerning this John Price. As shown in the above record, he is not the son of John Price and Hannah Williamson. He also is not John Price V. His father, John Price of the Parish of Chist Church, wrote his will 24 September 1726 naming sons Thomas, Robert, James, John, Samuel, Wiiliam and daughter Jane. His grandfather was a Robert Price who wrote his will 1689.

The correct children are Catherine, wife of Stark Boulware, Susannah and four sons: Thomas Price wife Mary, deceased circa 1773, Cumberland County; John Price married to Anna DeJarnette, died circa 1817 in Cumberland County; Richard Price married to Mary DeJarnette, died 1781 in Cumberland County and William Price died Cumberland County without issue.
